What is ClearPlay?by Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger 07 Feb 2008 05:14 PM ClearPlay is a new electronic device that has been designed to filter out objectionable content from standard DVDs. Sounds pretty good, but how does it work? First, you need a DVD player that is geared to work with the ClearPlay system. Not every DVD on the market is compatible, so you'll want to check the features on your machine and make sure it will work. Then you need to download the filter for your particular movie from the ClearPlay website. You can put the information on a flash drive and then insert the drive into the DVD player. Then you tell the machine what you would like to filter for - sexual scenes, language, violence - and the filter will tell your DVD player what to skip over. A membership is $7.95 a month and for that, you get a free DVD player for $19.99 shipping. This price holds true for a full year. During that time, you can download all the filters you like for free. That's really quite reasonable. Of course, I don't know what the membership will be after the first year, but I imagine one would find out. Unlike companies that take movies and edit them for you, ClearPlay is not breaking copyright laws. The movie is still intact - you just don't have to see the parts that would be of concern to you. Additionally, according to their website, ClearPlay has no competition on the market. They hold the patent to this technology. Sounds like they've got the corner on a pretty decent market. I do not own a ClearPlay myself. I like the concept a lot, but as a movie reviewer, I need to know what's in the film so I know how to recommend it. However, I have friends who use the system all the time, and they say it's well worth it. What about you? Do you own a ClearPlay, and do you think it's worth it?
