Tiger-Sniffing Dogs Go to Work in Cambodia

As recently as a hundred years ago, Asia had a tiger population numbering around one hundred thousand. These days, there may be as few as five thousand tigers in the wild. Researchers are hoping to find signs of a tiger presence in one of Cambodia’s largest nature reserves — Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area. The last time anyone saw evidence of tigers in the park was in 2007, when a paw print was found. Surveys and camera traps failed to find any sign of the big cats in 2008. Now it’s time for Cambodia to turn to the dogs for help. … Continue reading

Tiger Populations Dwindle In India

Animal conservation experts believe that India may have less than 1,500 tigers left — that is half the population from just five years ago. Conservationists are performing a state by state census of tiger populations in India and expect to have final results in December. However, tiger experts are estimating that there are only between 1,300 and 1,500 tigers left in the country. Wildlife experts and government officials agree on the estimate, which is a severe drop from the 2002 tiger population — 3,700 tigers. If the census is still going on, how do the conservationists have this estimate? Technology … Continue reading

Lord of the Forest – Caroline Pitcher

A richly illustrated book, “Lord of the Forest” will transport you and your child to the deepest jungles, the most verdant valleys, and the clearest streams on a journey to lands untouched by man. When Tiger was born, his eyes were closed but his hearing was excellent. He could hear sap flowing, grass growing and the monkey calling to his tribe. He told his mother all the things he could hear, and she gave him a warning – when everything around him stopped making noise, he must be ready, for the lord of the forest would be on his way. … Continue reading

Tiger Can’t Sleep – S. J. Fore

I did it! I found another adorable children’s picture book with great illustrations and clever text. This one is called “Tiger Can’t Sleep.” The tiger in this book is just too cute for words. Our main character is a little boy who’s getting all ready for bed, snuggled down under the covers. However, his blissful slumber is disturbed because there’s a tiger in his closet, and that tiger is eating potato chips and keeping the little boy awake with all the crunch, crunch, crunching. So he asks the tiger to be quiet. The tiger pulls out a whisk broom, cleans … Continue reading

Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon – Marjane Satrapi

One of the biggest challenges of raising children is getting them to go to bed at night, and among the many things that interfere with this process is the natural fear of monsters. “Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon” is a great children’s picture book to help overcome that concern. Marie was your average little girl. She had a cherry tree in her yard and she loved to climb up and eat her fill. She enjoyed playing with her cat and drawing pictures of bunnies. During the day, everything in Marie’s life was normal. But that was during the day. … Continue reading

Blossom and Boo: A Story about Best Friends – Dawn Apperley

Blossom is a cute little white rabbit, and her very best friend is Boo, a brown bear cub. Every day they meet to play together in the woods. In the summer, they like to go exploring and make each other daisy chains. They skip stones in the stream, causing splashes and ripples. In the fall, they go berry picking and have picnics. When Blossom falls down and hurts her paw, Boo is right there to make her feel better. Blossom repays him by giving him some of her berries when the mice steal his. Sure enough, Blossom and Boo are … Continue reading

I Could Eat You Up! – Jo Harper

Little children are just the cutest things in the world, and I’m sure that as parents or doting aunts and uncles, we’ve all had a child enter our lives that we’re just sure we could eat. My two-year-old is a “sandwich” – that’s what we’ve always called him, because he’s just so edible. “I Could Eat You Up!” by Jo Harper celebrates that special bond between children and parents that makes the children so very delicious – and we discover that in the animal kingdom, the parents feel very much about their children the way that we as humans do. … Continue reading

Broom Mates – Marge Palatini

Who says you can only talk about witches on Halloween? I love this picture book by Marge Palatini, and so even though we’re still three months out from the spookiest holiday (unless you count National Mother-in-Law Day) I’m going to share it with you. Gritch the Witch was studying herself in her magic mirror, noting how worn out she looked. She needed to get some beauty sleep, badly. She climbed into bed and was just dozing off when the doorbell rang (or rather, screamed.) With a sigh, Gritch went to the door, to find her sister, Mag the Hag, standing … Continue reading

The Adventures of Taxi Dog – Debra and Sal Barracca

“The Adventures of Taxi Dog,” a rhyming children’s picture book, has been featured on “Reading Rainbow” on PBS. That from the start tells me that we’re about to read a high quality book. The story is told from the perspective of Maxi, the dog. He used to be a stray on the streets of New York City. He lived primarily in the park, but had to be careful to avoid the dogcatcher. He ate whatever he could find, and life was pretty hit-and-miss for him. One day a taxi pulled over to the curb with a flat tire. When the … Continue reading
