Around here we don't have a lot of time to stay current on the news. About a year ago my husband subscribed to weekly news magazine The Week. This news magazine bills itself at being "the best of the U.S. and International media" as well as being "all you need to know about everything that matters."

My husband likes that the larger articles give more than one side to a story. He likes that it covers all the current news topics in condensed form, and that it covers national and national news. You can read The Week in less time than reading an entire newspaper.

What I like about this roughly fifty page publication is that it covers so many topics. They start off with "the main stories" and "how they were covered". It's very interesting to see the different slants that different columnists and editorials have on the very same topic or event. From there they move on to the "Controversy of the week". Several pages are devoted to the "world at a glance" which covers major news items from around the world. I like that the cities are pointed out on maps.

There's a section on interesting people in the news, and a short "gossip" section on what the stars are up to. The "best columns" section pulls from publications like The Washington Post, Slate.com, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune as well as European and international publications.

"Talking Points" covers many sides to issues like health care, the recent writers strike, immigration, and the death penalty. The latest news and breakthroughs in science are covered under "Health and Science". Recent topics have included the link between fat cells and cancer, the science behind attraction, the discovery of a solar system similar to ours, and the dangerous effects of caffeine drinks.

There are a few ads, but not very many. There's also humor in the short excerpts from tabloids and in selected political cartoons. Books, stage productions, art exhibitions, and film are also reviewed. The reader will even find a recipe or two, fun places to travel, and even suggestions for TV viewing for the week.

It's a great magazine for people who like to keep up with news and learn more about the world.
