The Three Investigators

As we continue our search for great summer reads for young adult readers, I’d like to introduce you to “The Three Investigators,” geared toward readers ages 10-14. I read nearly every one of these as I was growing up, and loved them. First introduced bearing the name of Alfred Hitchcock as an endorsement, this series soon grew beyond the need for the celebrity promotional. Several authors contributed to the series, namely Robert Arthur, William Arden, Nick West, M.V. Carey, and Marc Brandel. The Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews. Their headquarters is an old trailer in … Continue reading

Three Ways to Help Your Local Missionaries

When I first joined the church, I loved going on splits with the sister missionaries. Now that I have three small children – and one on the way – getting out is a bit more challenging. At the same time, my circle of contacts at present is mostly limited to other LDS sisters, which gives me few close friends to introduce the missionaries to. I would like to share a few ‘think outside the box’ ways that you can help the missionaries if you find yourself facing similar challenges. Be a people greeter. When you see the missionaries bringing investigators … Continue reading

Seeking and Following the Spirit-Part 4

Look at the bottom of this post for links to the previous three parts in this series. Once we learn to invite the spirit into our lives, and rely on it for survival, we have to be able to recognize it, and follow its promptings. If asked what the Spirit felt like, it would most likely be a different answer for every person. I love the talk by Elder Packer called the Candle of the Lord. This was a talk he gave to new mission presidents. Since we may not be able to perfectly describe what the Spirit is to … Continue reading

Losing It in Public

Overheard at the zoo last week: Mom to tweenage son: “Knock it off, Caden! We’re not in a video game.” Tweenage boy attempting to trip younger sibling: “You’re going down.” Mom: “Caden! Knock! It! Off!” Boy: “DOWN!” And that’s exactly where the younger sibling went. Flat on his face, courtesy of the tweenage boy, right in front of the polar bear exhibit where my daughter and I happened to be standing. Unfortunately, we had front row seats to the mama drama. And the show was far from over. In fact, it was just beginning. Once the mom saw her younger … Continue reading

The Claims Investigator Arrived

This all started with a puddle on the floor. I have been blogging my way through the process involved in making a claim with my homeowners insurance company, from start to whenever it gets finished. The insurance company connected us with a claims investigator. Here is how that went. As I said, it all started with a mysterious puddle on the floor. It seemed that the water leaked in during a hard rain. My husband made a claim with the company we have our homeowners insurance through. So far, we have had some repairmen come take a look at the … Continue reading

Washington Party Crasher is Missing…or Maybe Not

Remember Michaele Salahi? She and hubby Tareq Salahi were famous (or rather infamous) for crashing the President Obama’s state dinner in 2009. And as luck would have it, she then landed on “Real Housewives of D.C.” Today, hubby Tareq’s manager told CNN that his wife had been missing since Tuesday. Manager Gina Rodriguez said, “It is our belief as of last night Michaele Salahi may have been kidnapped or abducted and is being held under duress and forced to tell persons, including authorities, she is OK.” Tareq last saw his wife at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at their home. She … Continue reading

Conference Center Turns Ten Years Old

I don’t know if the last decade has gone as quickly for you as it has for me, but can you believe that the Conference Center is ten years old this year? Ten years ago this month, the first General Conference was held in this historic building, giving a break to the much smaller (but still impressive) Tabernacle. The Conference Center has become part of Salt Lake City and definitely part of Temple Square. After a decade of use, it’s still as beautiful, inspiring, and useful as the day it was completed. One of my favorite features of the Conference … Continue reading

Toddler-sitting Teen Texts Herself Into Big Trouble

Thankfully, I have never had to pay anyone to watch my child. I was reminded of how grateful I am of this fact after hearing about the teen babysitter from Ohio, who decided she was sick of her job, and ditched her charges before their parents returned home. The kids are okay, their parents are livid, and the teen sitter is behind bars. Actually, 18-year-old Mia Kemper was released from jail on her own recognizance. Which is a good thing considering she would have probably had a hard time finding someone to bail her sorry behind out of the slammer … Continue reading

Bernie Mac’s Health and Mary-Kate’s Heath

Bernie Mac has been hospitalized for pneumonia, but a source, who reportedly knows Mac’s family, told the Chicago Sun-Times that the comedian is in “very, very critical condition.” Bernie Mac’s publicist, Danica Smith, calls it a “very horrible rumor,” saying that there is no truth to it at all. Mac was admitted to a Chicago hospital (his hometown) on August 1, but Smith said he was responding well and was expected to be released soon. Mac had previously been diagnosed with sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory disease, in his lungs, but Smith said this bout with pneumonia is not related to … Continue reading

Travel Tales: How Not to Cut Down on Your Gas Bill

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And in some cases illegal action. With the price of gas skyrocketing to record levels it’s no surprise that some people are resorting to some unconventional means to gas up. Just ask police in Hermitage, Pennsylvania who say they may have finally figured out how mass quantities of diesel fuel have been lifted from local gas stations. According to authorities, the perpetrators allegedly employed a specially equipped pickup truck trailer with a trap door and a vacuum hose. Police say no one has been charged for the crime yet, but the truck and trailer … Continue reading
