True Devotion – Dee Henderson

After completing the O’Malley series, which was a tribute to our firefighters, social workers, and crime fighters, Dee Henderson wrote the “Uncommon Heroes” series, a tribute to our men and women who fight for us in the military. In “True Devotion,” the first book of this series, we meet Kelly Jacobs, a young widow of three years whose husband, Nick, was a SEAL. She was told that he died in a training accident and she was given a folded flag to remember him by, but nothing can erase the pain and hurt of his passing. She throws herself into her … Continue reading

Author Review — Dee Henderson

Dee Henderson is possibly the foremost Christian author currently on the market. With her incredibly suspenseful mysteries, her believable characters and touching religious moments, it’s not hard to see why her readers keep coming back for more. I have reviewed her most popular series, “The O’Malleys,” here on Families.com, and now I’d like to tell you more about the author herself. This proved to be a little bit difficult, as Dee is a very private person. She doesn’t share personal details with her fans, preferring to maintain a distance. Given her large fan base and popularity, I think that’s wise. … Continue reading

The Rescuer – Dee Henderson

It’s with a measure of sadness that I review this last book of the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson and say goodbye to this remarkable family. The only thing that will make me feel better is if you promise to read every one of them, and soon. Stephen is the only member of the family that has not yet converted to Christianity or settled down. A firefighter for years, he changed jobs and has been a paramedic for most of his career, competent in his profession and caring with the patients. Meghan is a nurse in the ER who has … Continue reading

The Healer — Dee Henderson

In book #5 of the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson, we learn about Rachel, who works as a trauma psychologist for the Red Cross. Heavy rains have turned the Des Plaines River into a monster, taking over Chicago and turning the streets into fast-swirling gushes. Homes are being evacuated and parents, as well as their children, are scared. Rachel has been helping in the shelter all day. Her job is to see to it that every person there is comforted in some way, gets some hope and can see their way clear toward building a future. Her brother Jack’s boss, … Continue reading

The Protector — Dee Henderson

Jack is the firefighter in the O’Malley family. He thinks nothing of dashing into danger to pull out people who have been trapped in the roaring flames. He feels a strong sense of obligation to serve wherever he can, and doesn’t think about the possible danger to himself while he’s doing it. Cassie Ellis is a firefighter on his same team. She was caught in a horrible blaze and lost the hearing in her ear, and hasn’t been back on the job since. She and Jack have been good friends and they stay in touch, but they aren’t co-workers anymore. … Continue reading

SISTERCHICKS Down Under! – Robin Jones Gunn

I’ve never read a book by Robin Jones Gunn before, and I didn’t know what a SISTERCHICK was, either. It’s a copyrighted term meaning a friend who loves you like a sister and tells you things you need to hear. Sounds like the kind of friend we all need. I was very pleased to make the acquaintance with the author and the term—“SISTERCHICKS Down Under!” was a fun read. We start the book by meeting Kathleen and Tony. Tony works for a movie studio and has been asked to go to New Zealand for three months for his current project. … Continue reading

Peace Like a River – Leif Enger

Wow. I came to the end of the book and had to pause a minute to absorb everything I had just read. “Peace Like a River” is the best book I’ve read so far this year. Rueben Land is an eleven-year-old with a horrible case of asthma. Swede is his nine-year-old sister, and they have an older brother, Davy, already in his teens. Their father, Jeremiah, has been single for years, and is an amazing man. Deeply connected to his faith, he has literally performed miracles, and Rueben has seen him do it. The family is poor, but they are … Continue reading

A Can of Peas – Traci DePree

In “A Can of Peas” by Traci DePree, we learn about teh Morgan family. Peter Morgan’s grandfather Roy was a farmer, devoted to his land. Whenever Peter would go to the farm for a visit, he loved to follow Roy around, watching him operate the machinery, milk the cows, and run the tractor up and down the fields, but he wasn’t there often enough to get a feel for how everything was done. Years later, when his grandfather passes away and his grandmother is trying to figure out what she’ll do with the farm, Peter strongly feels that he and … Continue reading
