The Next Food Network Star

My kids are rushing through their baths tonight because in a little while The Next Food Network Star comes on TV. I'm not a big fan of reality TV shows, but we have watched the past two episodes as a family and have really enjoyed not only the show, but watching TV together.

Most shows on TV these days just aren't child friendly. Even the mild shows have language and sexual references that I'd rather not have to explain to small children.

Two weeks ago there were ten participants, each week one person is dropped off the show. The winner will get their own show on The Food Network. We've had fun trying to predict each week which contestant will be let go and which will win the entire contest. Week one had the contestants making a dish in thirty minutes for the stars of Food Network. Last week we all laughed as Robert Irvine banged on a pan to wake the contestants up at 3 a.m. The contestants had to scramble to get ready, then travel around the city to bakeries and food shops, answering food quizzes, completing cooking tasks like making baguettes and cutting up chickens. Then they had to cook a brunch for thirty people on a moving train.

Tonight's challenge has the eight remaining participants all using a potato to cook a dish that highlights their culinary point of view. It's interesting to learn more about food. We all like to cook and to learn about food. I also like that the selection committee doesn't make fun of the participants, but mainly tries to point out their errors, praise their successes, and help them as professional chefs.

The show airs at 10 PM EST on Sunday nights, and runs for an hour.
