The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear – Don and Audrey Wood

The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear was one of our favorite children’s picture books. Husband and wife team Don and Audrey Wood wrote this fun story, and it is illustrated by Don Wood. It’s sold over a million copies! The book opens with a tiny door in the roots of a tree. Coming out of the door are a tiny ladder and a little mouse. The narrator of the story asks the mouse what he’s doing. When the mouse leans his ladder against a strawberry plant that towers over him we figure out that … Continue reading

Jubal’s Wish – Audrey Wood

Husband/illustrator and wife/author team up for “Jubal’s Wish.” Jubal is a bullfrog (I’m not sure if he’s related to Jeremiah or not) who has prepared a wonderful picnic feast. With his basket over his arm, he skips down the flower path, enjoying the beautiful spring day. On his way, he passes the home of Gerdy Toad. She is outside beating a rug with a broom, and is cross when Jubal greets her. She can find nothing good about the day. Her children are out of control, her house is a mess, and she has no time for a picnic, even … Continue reading

The Napping House – Audrey Wood

The winning combination of husband and wife team Audrey Wood, author, and Don Wood, illustrator, comes together again in “The Napping House,” a sleepy story written in the style of “The House that Jack Built.” We start with the house, and in the house is a bed, a nice warm cozy bed. In the bed is a granny, flat on her back and snoring her head off, and in wanders a child to climb in with Granny. He makes himself comfortable and together they snooze, in the cozy bed, in the napping house. Then comes the dog to fall asleep … Continue reading

I’m as Quick as a Cricket and The Very Quiet Cricket

This time of year, we always find a few crickets in the house. Here are two great classic picture books for read aloud enjoyment. Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood is one of those books you will find in a lot of preschool and kindergarten classrooms. It recently came out in a board book edition for the youngest readers. In the book a young child pretends to be all sorts of animals. The illustrations by Don Wood are silly and imaginative. The child is shown hiding in a seashell, and leading a tiger in the dark. The text has … Continue reading

Sylvia Jean, Drama Queen – Lisa Campbell Ernst

I was first drawn to this children’s picture book by the title, and then by the picture on the front cover – a pig, dressed in a ballgown, wearing a crown and waving a flag. That’s an attention-getting book if I ever saw one. Her name is Sylvia Jean Connelly, and she lives in a make-believe world. She has a wide variety of costumes, suitable for whatever might come up. The perfect outfit to wear to the dentist would, of course, be a superhero costume, because superheros aren’t afraid of the dentist. You should of course dress as a swan if … Continue reading

Bertie was a Watchdog – Rick Walton

Usually, when you hear that someone has a watchdog, you think they have a dog that’s big, mean, scary, and keeps burglars out. Well, this is not the case with Bertie. You see, he’s called a watchdog because he’s the size of a watch. But don’t let that fool you into thinking he can’t protect his house from burglars. It takes more than size to be a good protector – it takes brains, and Bertie has lots of those. Take, for instance, the night when a big, mean, awful burglar opened the window and came in. He saw Bertie sitting … Continue reading

I Am the King! – Nathalie Dieterle

“I Am the King” is the story of Little Louis, a brown bunny with a very loving mommy. One day his mommy gave him a crown, and as she put it on his head she said, “For my little king!” Well, I’m afraid he took that seemingly harmless statement of maternal affection just a wee bit too far. With his nose stuck up in the air, Little Louis strode off to examine the state of his kingdom. To all the dragons under his bed and monsters outside the window, he proudly proclaimed, “I am the king!” To which they all … Continue reading

Top Ten Picture Books for Preschoolers

Pre-school age children love vivid characters that they can relate to. They enjoy stories with action and repetition. I had a hard time narrowing the list down to my top ten favorite books, but here they are. Corduroy by Don Freeman Every child has a stuffed animal and subsequently will enjoy reading about the adventures of Corduroy, a stuffed bear. Young readers will fall in love with the cuddly bear as he comes alive one night and searches the department store for his lost button. Cows In The Kitchen by June Crebbin This is a book and a sing-along since … Continue reading
