The Mensa Murders — Lee Martin

In my continuing search for national fiction that is clean but is neither LDS nor Christian (to increase the variety in my blogs) I picked up this book by Lee Martin. Imagine my surprise when midway through the book, the main character announces that while she’s not a regular attendee, when she goes to church, she goes to the Mormon church, and that her son is a Mormon. Honestly, guys, I am trying to give you some more variety, I really am! Deb Ralston is a forty-something detective with the Fort Worth Police. In her line of work, she’s seen … Continue reading

Lost Highways – Curtiss Ann Matlock

I love finding new authors (well, new to me) and Curtiss Ann Matlock captured my imagination from the first page. Her narrative voice is so friendly and quirky—I was pulled in to the character even before I picked up on the plot. Rainey Valentine is a complicated woman. Complicated in a good way, though. She’s been divorced twice but still believes in true love. She’s taken a little time off from her ‘real’ life to follow a dream—her mother, champion barrel-racer, left her the prize horse and trailer in her will, and Rainey is driving around the country to compete … Continue reading

Author Interview – F. M. Meredith (2)

Thank you for joining us for part two of our talk with author F. M. Meredith. If you missed part one, you can click here to catch up. F. M., you mention you’ve gone on ride-alongs with police officers to lend authenticity to your stories. Was that frightening? Did anything scary ever happen with you in the police car? The scariest ride-along was with my son-in-law, who drove really fast, careening around corners. He also made me get out of the car and follow along behind when he was chasing a burglar. I wasn’t so scared as wondering what I’d … Continue reading

Light on Snow – Anita Shreve

“Light on Snow” is the first Anita Shreve novel I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. Nicky Dillon is a twelve-year-old girl whose mother and baby sister were killed in a car accident two years before. Her father was completely bereft and sold their house, packing up all their things and taking them to New England, where he hoped they would make a brand new start. Nicky doesn’t like the fact that they’ve left every aspect of their old life behind, but she knows he needs this, so she tries to go along with it. One afternoon she and her … Continue reading

Owls Well That Ends Well – Donna Andrews

Meg Langslow is a unique woman with a unique talent – she’s a blacksmith. For the time being, however, she’s had to put her forge aside and forge ahead with something even bigger, in the form of a fifteen-family yard sale. She and her boyfriend Michael have purchased an older home on the outskirts of the small town of Caerphilly, and all the things that were in the house now belong to them. Most of it junk, some of it collectable, they’ve decided to have a yard sale and all the relatives decided to join them and bring their own … Continue reading
