Summer Reading Series: An Awesome Book!

Some book title, huh? It takes guts to bestow such a lofty label on your debut work, but there seems to be a method behind Dallas Clayton’s madness. Clayton penned and illustrated the psychedelic children’s picture book about dreaming big, and there’s no doubt he has equally high expectations for its future. At first glance, An Awesome Book! appears to be a sweet bedtime story, which encourages young readers to never stop dreaming, or perhaps, more importantly, never allow anyone to limit their visions. However, as pint-sized bookworms dig deeper into the 64-page explosion of colorful images and whimsical wording, … Continue reading

Magical Milestones

My daughter turns eight this year. Eight. How did that happen? She has big plans for her big day, and I have equally daunting decisions to make as I craft her birthday scrapbook. For the past five years I have always added a birthday poem to a layout. When I first started the tradition, I penned my own prose. However, as she aged, so did I, and my creativity took a hit in the process. For the past couple of years, I’ve turned to the Internet and books to find a short but sweet poem expressing my pride in her … Continue reading

Disney Purchases Facebook Gaming Company

Walt Disney Corporate’s certainly busy buying up companies lately. First they officially took charge of Pixar, then Marvel, and now, according to the Washington Times, they’re preparing to buy Playdom for $563.2 million. So what’s Playdom? If you’ve ever played a game on Facebook like Sorority Life or Social City, then you’ve used a Playdom product; Playdom makes many of the little games available for play on Facebook, MySpace, or fancier cell phones. Playdom isn’t the only electronic/online property Disney’s snatched recently. Just a month ago it also purchased Tapulous, the maker of a popular iPhone music game, and in … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Lisa Pietsch!

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. When management announced they would be hiring bloggers, I applied for the topics of Food, Weight Loss and Disney. When they launched the blogs here in early December 2005, they hired me for all three topics as well as the position of Community Manager. Eventually, … Continue reading

Adoption Books with Great Art: The Tummy Mummy

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words, especially to children who are often visual thinkers. Hence this series of blogs on children’s adoption books with beautiful artwork. I have both praise for and caveats about the book Tummy Mummy, by author Michelle-Madrid-Branch, who was herself adopted. The book wonderfully conveys the birthmother’s concern for her child: “I love you, my special baby and my heart is full of emotion…because I know I am not the one to raise you. What am I to do?” The look on the (very) pregnant woman’s face is beautiful. Then the book gets … Continue reading

The Magical, Mystical, Marvelous Coat – Catherine Ann Cullen

“The Magical, Mystical, Marvelous Coat” is the story of a girl and her favorite piece of outerwear. She lists six reasons why it’s a magical coat. You see, there are six buttons that march down the front. The first one is labeled “cold,” the second, “warm,” and the third plays music. The fourth is shaped like a star, while the fifth is like a stone. The sixth button is a little tiny doll, who is also wearing a coat. One day, she went out to see what she could see. She came upon a giant who was miserable. Being so … Continue reading

Why should you use Disney’s Magical Express Service? Let’s talk about what it is first and foremost. The Magical Express Service is designed to help you get from the airport to the hotel with your luggage with a minimum of fuss and muss. The airport made a deal with Disney that allowed them to make sure the luggage was delivered to the … Continue reading

Where Can I Find That Book?

When my dad was young, he and his brothers and sisters read a book called “Thunder Cave.” It’s long been out of print, but the memories they have of reading that story are some of the most precious of their childhoods. Every so often, at family reunions, they would ask each other, “Did you find a copy of ‘Thunder Cave yet’?” Well, after several years of searching, one of them was able to locate a copy, and much rejoicing was heard in the land. That’s the sad thing about books. Once they stop selling well, they go out of print, … Continue reading
