Three Seasonal “Biscuit” Books – Alyssa Satin Capucilli

When my twins were little, we loved the Biscuit books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Pat Schories. These gentle stories all feature a cute, silly puppy named Biscuit and his owner. His owner is never named, but referred to as “the little girl”. These are great stories for emerging readers and younger children. Even the youngest child can say “woof, woof” along with biscuit. The illustrations are very heart warming. Here are three Biscuit books, perfect to read in this season. Biscuit Visits the Pumpkin Patch is a sturdy board book. Very young children will enjoy this simple book. Biscuit … Continue reading

Dragon’s Halloween – Dav Pilkey

Dragon’s Halloween by Dav Pilkey is the fifth book in the Dragon series, and is a great book for young readers. I love the Dragon books. They are sweet, and silly. The illustrations are worth paying attention to. You will find all sorts of extra laughs. Even though the book has simple words, the descriptions are marvelous. The book begins “It was October, and all the world was orange and brown.” Dragon’s Halloween is divided into three short chapters. In the first, Dragon searches a pumpkin patch for a pumpkin as big as a house to make into a scary … Continue reading

Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot – Dav Pilkey

From the author of “Captain Underpants” comes another series with just as much fun and zany action but a lot less underwear – Ricky Ricotta! With a name that’s a double pun (Ricotta’s a kind of cheese, and he’s a mouse, plus don’t forget Desi Arnaz’s character in “I Love Lucy” – he played Ricky Richardo) this little mouse is destined to be our next hero, along with his giant robot friend. It all begins in a mouse town called Squeakyville. Ricky lives there with his mother and father, and while he’s content, he wishes he had a real friend. … Continue reading

Best Folktale and Fairytale Books

Children and adults love to read, especially when it comes to folktales and fairytales. For instance, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Red Riding Hood are just some of our favorites. Another great category for children’s books is those that focus on Irish folklore. Although there are many books that you might consider buying, I wanted to provide you with some of my favorite choices. First, a book called, “Tales from Old Ireland” is a wonderful book that is enhanced with beautiful artwork. Inside this book are actually seven stories, each with a wonderful message to the child. For instance, The … Continue reading

The Dragon Books by Dav Pilkey

Dav Pilkey is not only the author of the somewhat controversial “Captain Underpants” books; he is the author of a charming series of books for smaller readers about an adorable dragon, named, appropriately, Dragon. Each book, while it shares the same theme throughout, is broken up into smaller chapters so that if your reader gets tired easily, they can make it “all the way through” a chapter and feel the sense of accomplishment without wearing themselves out. The first book I’m reviewing is called “A Friend for Dragon.” In the first chapter, Dragon is looking for a friend, but all … Continue reading

A Tiger Called Thomas – Charlotte Zolotow

A Tiger Called Thomas is a sweet, non-scary Halloween story. Charlotte Zolotow is one of my favorite children’s book authors. In the story, Thomas moves to a new neighborhood. He is too shy to go play with anyone, so he sits on his porch and watches the world go by. His mother urges him to go play and make friends, but he is convinced that no one will like him. On Halloween, his mother gives him a tiger costume. Under the mask, he finds the courage to get off his porch and go trick or treating. To his surprise, all … Continue reading

Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop – Lisa Shulman

We all know that Old MacDonald had a farm, and that on the farm he had all sorts of animals. But did you know that Old MacDonald also had a woodshop? I for one would never have guessed it. I also didn’t know that Old MacDonald was really a woman, and – she was a sheep! Will wonders never cease! But back to the point – she had a woodshop. And in this woodshop, she had a whole variety of tools. In fact, she had a saw. With a zzzt here and a zzzzt there. She also had a drill. … Continue reading
