Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Outbreak!

It started with one cat: runny nose, weepy eyes, sneezing. Soon three more cats were drippy and lethargic. The cats-only boarding facility had an outbreak! I’ve been working at the boarding facility since last December (how time flies) and this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this. The first cat — patient zero — usually has runny eyes and a sniffly nose. He’s a Himalayan, and like other flat-faced breeds, they can be susceptible to upper respiratory problems. Other Himalayans who come in to stay with us tend to have very runny eyes, too. So when patient zero … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about Animals

Children and animals seem to have a connection – they head straight for each other at every opportunity. Today I’m reading two picture books that contain animals. “Kittens, Kittens, Kittens” by Susan Meyers, illustrated by David Walker shows us many different kinds of kittens, from orange ones to gray ones, little and big, fluffy and not fluffy. Some are slender, sleek and shiny, and the newborns are as soft as silk. They bounce, pounce and mew – they’re everywhere! They chase toys, take naps, drink their milk, and go on trips. They love to snuggle and even climb trees. They … Continue reading

More Picture Books about Snow

We had some late-season white fluffy stuff fall on our lawn this morning, and so in honor of the day, I thought I’d share with you two more cute children’s books about snow. The first is “A Really Good Snowman” by Daniel J. Mahoney. Jack is having some issues with his little sister Nancy. She likes to be helpful, but her helpfulness is most often destructive. He’s been working really hard on a model airplane, and when Nancy comes in the room, she wants to help him with it. Picturing it as totally destroyed, he tells her that he’s going … Continue reading

Picture Books by Johanna Hurwitz

“Russell’s Secret” by Johanna Hurwitz tells us the story of a little boy who doesn’t want to go to school. His little sister Elisa gets to stay home, and he wants to be a baby too. His mother says that’s just fine with her, and Russell thinks he’s gotten away with something fantastic until she points out that if he wants to be a baby, he has to take everything that goes along with it. That includes mush for breakfast, no TV, definitely no Legos (he might swallow them) and he has to sit in the playpen with the baby! … Continue reading

The Birth-Order Blues – Joan Drescher

Millicent Brown is a little girl with a journalist bent as evidenced by the fact that she runs her own “newspaper.” While having troubles dealing with her little brother, she is inspired to interview her friends from school about where they fall in their families and how they feel about that. Her friend Kim is the oldest, and Beth falls between Tim and Terry. Ralph is the youngest, and Tony is an only child. Each friend has a different situation. Millicent starts with Kim, and asks her how she likes being the oldest. On the one hand, Kim loves it. … Continue reading

Monkey Business — Children’s Picture Books about Monkeys

Who doesn’t love a monkey? I found two adorable children’s picture books about the furry little creatures that I’d like to share with you today. The first is called “Hug,” and it is one of my favorite books of all time. My husband bought it for me for Mother’s Day about five years ago, and it was a perfect gift. He got major good husband points for that one. “Hug” is comprised almost entirely of pictures. At first we see a little monkey making his way through the forest. As he goes along, he sees different animal babies being hugged … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about The First Day of Winter

It’s the first official day of winter, although you wouldn’t know it by looking around here – we got hit hard this last weekend and it’s been winter around here ever since. The first book I’m reviewing is called, appropriately, “The First Day of Winter.” Written after the style of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” we read about all the things that were given to our main character by his friend, but over ten days rather than twelve. I’ll spare you the buildup and skip to the grand finale, but you have to sing along with me. Ready? Take a … Continue reading

The Day My Runny Nose Ran Away – Jason Eaton

Perhaps you have a cold, as many of us do. You may wish you could just take your nose off altogether, rather than having to deal with it any further. But be careful – you could end up “facing” the same situation as Jason does in this hysterical children’s picture book, “The Day My Runny Nose Ran Away.” One morning, Jason wakes up to find the following note on his pillow: “Dear Jason, Last night your mother told you not to wipe your nose on your sleeve. But did you listen? No! You wiped me up and down your lousy … Continue reading
