No Nap! – Eve Bunting

Anyone who has ever had a toddler will be able to identify with “No Nap,” a picture book by Eve Bunting. Dad is trying to get Susie to have her nap, but she insists that she’s not tired. Clever Dad – he’ll take her on a walk to wear her out. They both put on their jackets and head out into the chilly air. They go all the way around the block and then back home again. But Susie insists that she’s still not tired. Well, Dad has another idea. They’ll dance! Dancing should make Susie good and tired. He … Continue reading

Not Just Another Moose – Stephanie Green

The title of this picture book was the first thing to catch my eye. How can you not be drawn to a title like “Not Just Another Moose?” But then the illustration on the front cover got me, and by the time I reached the adorable story, I was a goner. We begin with some insight into the life of Moose. He was known throughout the forest for his huge antlers. They made him who he was. But then they fell off, and he thought his life was over. He ran home and called his mother, who explained to him … Continue reading

Vacation With George

Regular readers of my blog know that my young daughter is a HUGE Curious George fan. As such, I’ve researched many George inspired travel destinations. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as Curious George World or The Man with the Yellow Hat Land so we settle for places such as Curious George Goes to Wordsworth. Many speculate that the country home depicted … Continue reading

I’ve been writing stories since third or fourth grade, off and on. I got serious about writing in my twenties; I joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators when I was 30; I took a writing class at that time also, and that’s when I really began to … Continue reading

Author Review – Dodie Smith

After gleefully finding “I Capture the Castle” last year, equally gleefully blogging about it, and then, with a cackle I can only compare to that of a hen, proclaiming it my favorite read of 2006, I hereby pronounce that it’s time to learn a little more about the woman behind it all. Dodie Smith was born Dorothy Gladys Smith in 1896 in Lancashire, England, and grew up in Manchester. Her main dream as a child was to become an actress, but after spending sometime at the Academy of Dramatic Art, she decided that she was too short and wasn’t attractive … Continue reading
