Best Bedtime Books for Toddlers

My children and I enjoy reading books. Even though a couple of them are too young to read yet, they like to listen. My youngest especially likes to look at the pictures and pick out animals from the pages. She sometimes takes over story time by labeling everything she sees on the page. I let her because the others seem to like her little narratives too. Soon she will be retelling her version of the story in her own words as I turn the pages. There are several bedtime books we’ve enjoyed reading and exploring this month: *Ten, Nine, Eight … Continue reading

More Top Bed Time Books for Babies

When my daughter was a baby, sometimes I despaired of reading to her. After all, there are only so many times you can go through the “what’s this?” and “what’s that” books with the pictures and the words. You know the ones. The plot is a little thin, though babies love the bright pictures of the apples and the zebras. Older babies love finding the objects in question. However, as a former English major, I yearned for plot, character, even a setting. Besides, she ate the books. Literally. We have one book about babies with delightfully cute pictures, and the … Continue reading

The Picture Books of Tim Egan

Tim Egan is the talented author and illustrator of many hysterical children’s picture books. Using animals for his characters, he creates darling facial expressions and clever storylines to make his point in a way that children can relate to. In the first book I’d like to share, “Roasted Peanuts,” we meet Sam and Jackson, best friends, although very different. Sam is a horse, great at baseball, a fabulous athlete. Jackson is a cat, a little slow, methodical, with deadly aim. Jackson can pitch, but not quickly enough to play baseball the way the coach feels it ought to be played. … Continue reading

Top 10 Ways to Get Your Kids Excited About Reading: Get Silly!

Do you want to get your kids excited about reading? If so, get ready for the countdown: ten days of ideas that will get you and yours into reading! Silly is certainly in. I mean, with popular series like Captain Underpants, how could you possibly doubt the success of silly? My daughter recently brought home a chapter book called Snot Stew. No, it’s not about snot stew at all, thank goodness, but I suspect that the silly title was part of the attraction of the book. I know that I kept reading to figure out what the Snot Stew actually … Continue reading

Not Just Another Moose – Stephanie Green

The title of this picture book was the first thing to catch my eye. How can you not be drawn to a title like “Not Just Another Moose?” But then the illustration on the front cover got me, and by the time I reached the adorable story, I was a goner. We begin with some insight into the life of Moose. He was known throughout the forest for his huge antlers. They made him who he was. But then they fell off, and he thought his life was over. He ran home and called his mother, who explained to him … Continue reading

How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? – Jane Yolen

It’s flu season, just when we were having so much fun with cold season. Kids are miserable when they’re sick; they can’t play and oftentimes they don’t understand why we want them to take medicine and get some sleep. “How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?” by Jane Yolen just may help with that. From the moment you first crack open the book, you are treated to a darling selection of illustrations all over the flyleaves, each showing a dinosaur sick in bed. Some are sneezing, some are sipping tea, and some are checking their temperature on a thermometer. Then we … Continue reading

Olivia Saves the Circus, Olivia and the Missing Toy – Ian Falconer

Our precocious little pig is back in two more adventures, “Olivia Saves the Circus,” and “Olivia and the Missing Toy.” Let’s take a look and see what Olivia’s up to now. In “Olivia Saves the Circus,” we find Olivia getting ready for school. First she helps her mother by feeding her brothers. I’m using the term “help” loosely here. Then she gets dressed in a really boring school uniform, which she accessorizes with big red bows and striped tights (tre chic!) Riding her scooter down the street, she gets to school on time to participate in show and tell. Today … Continue reading
