Mediterranean Diet Wins Glowing Reviews

It seems as if people are always looking for the perfect diet.  But, it often alludes us.  We either feel deprived of food or don’t want to eat what we can have.  Worse yet, there are the diets that just don’t work! For years, I have been hearing good things about the Mediterranean diet.  This is the diet primarily followed by people that live in the southern regions of Italy, Greece, and Spain.  It includes a lot of fruit and vegetables along with olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fish, dairy, meat (but not red), and yes, even wine.  The diet … Continue reading

Anticipating Expenses in Your Budget

When establishing a budget, it is important to account for variability. Some monthly expenses change a bit each month, such as your energy bills, others are paid bi-annually or annually instead of monthly, such as taxes, and some pop up unexpectedly. Others expenses may vary in their amounts each month. Knowing how to anticipate your expenses will leave you with a solid budget that is always in the black. First start with the stable expenses, those that do not change from month to month. Some examples might be your car payment, your mortgage payment, or a student loan. You can … Continue reading

Our First Preschool Preview

There is something about this time of year that makes me think about school. Perhaps it is a deeply ingrained sense of anticipation of a new school year which is left over from my childhood. You see, I was one of those kids who loved school. This year, my school related thoughts involve assessing Dylan’s readiness for preschool and assessing a few preschools in my community to see whether there are any that are a good fit for him. As luck would have it, the other day when I brought Dylan to one of our favorite playgrounds, I got to … Continue reading

Wither (Chemical Garden) by Lauren DeStefano Book Review

Young Adult Imagine knowing that when you reach the age of 20, an unstoppable virus will take your life. It will also take the life of your twin brother when he reaches 25. Scientist unwittingly released this curse on the population through genetic engineering that left one generation virtually immortal, and the rest dying before they really get a chance to live. For Rhine Ellery, this fact is all too real. At the age of 16, with only four years to go, she finds herself in a world in panic, where orphans freeze to death on her porch and girls … Continue reading

Simple Prayers by Michael Golding Book Review

Simple Prayers by Michael Golding needs to be unwrapped slowly, savored, tasted, smelled, rolled around on the tongue to catch both the bitter and the sweet. Then again, comparing this novel to a complex confection, a tired cliche, doesn’t do it justice. “Pansies, chrysanthemums, violets, daisies, lilies, lilacs, pinks. Their perfume sent wild ribbons into the air, and their color woke the rabbits. Spring had finally come to Riva di Pignoli. And flowers were just the beginning.” The novel takes place in a small island near Venice in the fourteenth century, a setting that is both dreamlike and throbbing with … Continue reading

Insurance Blog Week in Review – Week of March 4 – 11, 2012

Each and every week, there can be anywhere between twelve and fourteen different blogs appearing on the Insurance Blog. Keeping up with the Insurance Blog is a good way to stay informed about insurance changes that can affect your family. Use the Week in Review is a quick way to “ketchup”! Gluten-Free Food Review: Glutino Blueberry Breakfast Bars

It isn’t easy to find something to eat for breakfast when you have a gluten-allergy. Toast, waffles, pancakes, and most cereals all contain gluten. What is left to eat? One option is the blueberry breakfast bars by Glutino. Here is my review of this easy to eat breakfast food. Before I discovered that I had an allergy to gluten, I used to eat a lot of granola bars. Unlike many other types of breakfast foods, granola bars, and breakfast bars, do not require a lot of preparation before you can eat them. You don’t have to thaw them out, or … Continue reading

Movie Review: Gentleman’s Agreement

I love finding correlations to life in all my experiences, be it in overhearing a conversation or watching a movie. Everything can be taken as a lesson, and if we’re willing to look beneath the layers, we learn so much. This was further brought home to me the other night as I sat watching the classic movie “Gentleman’s Agreement” with Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire. The premise of the movie in and of itself was thought-provoking: Peck, starring as Skyler Green, is a journalist tasked to write a series on anti-Semitism. He struggles for a time to get the angle … Continue reading

Movie Review: “Griffin and Phoenix,” 2006

Every so often, I love to curl up and watch a good movie. This afternoon, I chose “Griffin and Phoenix,” the PG-13 film starring Dermot Mulroney and Amanda Peet. It’s a very thought-provoking story about a man named Griffin who has terminal cancer, but is determined to live each day to the absolute fullest. When he meets Sarah Phoenix, he keeps his secret from her, not wanting to cast a shadow on whatever time they might have to spend together. As their relationship progresses, he learns that she has a secret of her own, and they spend the rest of … Continue reading

Romantic Travel Options

Nothing says love quite like eloping on Valentine’s Day. Or at least that’s the belief of a travel company that just emailed me a list of the world’s most romantic places to say “I do.” To be perfectly honest, I don’t know a single person who has gotten hitched on Valentine’s Day. However, I agree that February 14th is an ideal day to spend with your special someone. Whereas I am not big on spontaneous vow exchanges, I wholeheartedly agree that the following travel destinations can certainly add romance to a relationship: Cruise Ships: Many cruise lines offer romantic packages … Continue reading
