Sagwa

Sagwa is a Chinese Siamese cat. Yes, that's a little confusing - but her breed is Siamese and she lives in China, so hence, she's Chinese. She has an older brother named Dongwa, a younger sister named Sheegwa, and they live with their parents in the palace of the magistrate, the man in charge of their country village. They have a cook to prepare them whatever delicacies they fancy (would that make their meal a Fancy Feast? I'm sorry, I really am) These are some very pampered pussies.

There's a reason for this, whoever - they aren't just ordinary cats. They can write Chinese characters by dipping their tails in ink, and they act as scribes for the magistrate. Sagwa's parents handle most of the highly important documents, and they are training up their children to do the task as well.

When the cats aren't having their lessons, they have adventures all over the village. They make friends with alley cats, they help solve disputes, and sometimes they have disputes of their own - they may be special cats, but they are siblings, after all.

I love the way this animated show is drawn. Even the clouds in the sky have that artistic Chinese look. When I sit down to watch this show with my children, I enjoy the vases in the hallways of the palace, the tapestries and other wall hangings, and the descriptions of the festivals and celebrations they're having. I feel as though I've had the chance to visit another land from my living room, and another time as well - the show is set in Ancient, not Modern, China.

There are mini-documentaries sprinkled throughout each episode which shows children exploring different cultures from all over the world. Viewers also learn the importance of making choices, showing courage, and finding friends.

"Sagwa" is based on the children's book "Sagwa: the Chinese Siamese Cat" written by famed author Amy Tan.

My daughter loves Sagwa--especially her bat friend Foo-Foo!

Foo-Foo looks a little too much like a mouse with wings for my taste. Shall we say, I'm not batty about bats? :)
