Reader’s Digest

Reader’s Digest Magazine has been around much longer than I have and plays a part in my earliest memories. First published in 1922 by husband and wife team DeWitt and Lila Wallace, only five thousand copies were made in that first run. But only a decade later, Reader’s Digest became the most popular magazine in the United States. Soon the magazine reached worldwide status as well. Today it is read by an estimated 95 million readers around the globe. We had a subscription to Reader’s Digest at my house, and we never let it lapse. I remember delivery days –when … Continue reading

Writer’s Digest Magazine

Are you an aspiring author? Are you already published but seeking ways to hone your craft? One of the most valuable tools you will find to help you in your quest is “Writer’s Digest Magazine.” Each issue features a Brag Board, where readers can write in and share their accomplishments, such as finding an agent to represent them, getting their first article published, overcoming objections from friends and family to find success, etc. I find myself relating to much of what is said by the other readers and it gives me a feeling of unity. The magazine regularly includes a … Continue reading

Dear Fitness Readers

Hey there, do you have a minute? I want to talk to you a sec about all the crazy running we do. Recently, I was talking to a friend of mine and she told me – emphatically – that I needed to take a three-day weekend and just shut it all down. I can’t say she’s wrong, I need a break and I’m already planning to take one the week of Thanksgiving, but that’s four and a half loooooong weeks away. So until then – here are some suggestions for distressing that I plan to put into practice myself: Meditation … Continue reading

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

When it comes to curriculum I am like a kid in a candy store. Educational stores are my weakness and a true threat to my budget. I see all the colors, pages, book covers, sizes and shapes and I want to look through every one of them. Picking one can be such a challenge as I want to pick only the best for my kids. At some point, I just have to bite the bullet and make a decision. For better or for worse, I pick out a science, math and language curriculum and close my eyes and pay. At … Continue reading

A bit of spritual motivation at the dinner table.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 KJV I want to start out by saying that Families.com is not a Christian website. Families.com supports families of all sizes, colors and set of beliefs. Families.com welcomes all families and individuals to partake in their site and discussion boards. The weight loss section is not affiliated with the Christian section of this website. So what is with the verse and spiritual motivation? In my time writing for Families.com, I have received several messages and emails from readers. I am … Continue reading

Tips for Recycling Magazines

If there is one thing we get in this house, it is a ton of magazines each week. Hardly a day goes by when we don’t get one and most days it is more than one. Considering my love for pop culture, I have to have my weekly People, Entertainment Weekly, Star Magazine, and Enquirer plus I get Ladies Home Journal, Readers Digest and that’s not even taking into consideration the magazines my husband and son get! Call me old fashioned, but I still like my magazines in paper form rather than reading them online. I know it isn’t very … Continue reading

Recording Genealogy Research in Books

When I first realized the importance of genealogical research, I wanted a book in which to record my research data and notes. I started with a three-ring binder and page protectors. I put everything that I had pertaining to my family tree in the binder. I had articles on how to build a family tree that I had clipped from magazines. I put those together in sleeves and added a tab divider to keep them organized. Next, I added handwritten notes that were given to me by my grandparents. The notes contained names and dates of some of our ancestors, … Continue reading

A Happy Accident Gives Free Passionfruit

Sometimes things that happen by accident turn out for the best. One time a friend was given several passionfruit in a paper bag. She put them in the fridge. They got pushed to the back as things often do in fridges and as a result she forgot about them. By the time she discovered them they were all shriveled, so she decided to see if she could grow a passionfruit from the seeds. She planted them all in soil in pots. Sure enough in time little green shoots appeared. When the passionfruit plants were about eighteen inches high she moved … Continue reading

Are You Ready for Raw?

Sting, Angela Bassett, Woody Harrelson, David Bowie, Lisa Bonet, Robin Williams, Donna Karan, Alicia Silverstone and Demi Moore are a just a few of the celebrities you may have heard of who are eating raw foods and proud of it. We’re hearing more and more about raw food being all the rage these days so I thought it was high time we took a look at what this diet/lifestyle really entails. The raw food diet is all about eating living foods that still have all their healthy enzymes intact. For obvious reasons, this is a vegetarian diet that relies solely … Continue reading
