The True Story of the Three Little Pigs – by A. Wolf, as told to Jon Scieszka

I’m sure you’ve figured out by now that I love funny picture books, and that I’m a sucker for a spoof. “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” is just hilarious and it’s my kind of book. As it turns out, the poor wolf has been maligned all these years. We have always perceived him to be the bad guy, the carnivore, the slobbery, vicious beast who only wants to mangle and destroy. But we’ve never heard the story from the wolf’s perspective – and now we have that unique chance. First of all, the wolf would like to … Continue reading

Piggies in a Polka – Kathi Appelt

Who could pass by a book called “Piggies in a Polka?” I certainly couldn’t, and so here we are. The first thing that catches my eye when I open the book is the rich, vibrant coloration of the illustrations. No mamby-pamby pastels – you feel drenched in shades of red, blue, green and yellow, with everything else in between. As it turns out, all the pigs from all over the holler are gathering for the yearly hootenanny. (I never knew how to spell that word before, and now I do . . .) We’ve got pigs playing instruments, selecting their … Continue reading

Starting a new year can be frightening, especially if you’ve never been to school before, and that’s where “I Am Not Going to School Today!” can be a big help. Our hero gets ready for school the night before – he has his clothes laid out, his snack in his backpack, and his shoes ready, so in the morning he can just get ready and go. His parents come in to kiss him … Continue reading

Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore! – David McPhail

In “Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore!” David McPhail capitalizes on his main strengths – clever illustrations and charming rhymes. The tight rhythmic cadence will make reading this story aloud all the more fun. Our main character was sitting in his easy chair, reading a book late into the night, when he heard some strange crunching sounds. When he goes into the kitchen to investigate, he slips on a banana peel, left there by a snacking bovine, and lands on a pile of pigs eating dates and figs. They were all over his kitchen, eating him out of house and home! They … Continue reading
