Night Tree - Eve Bunting

In Night Tree a mom, dad, brother and sister bundle into the front seat of a truck. They drive to where "the dark and quiet begin". This book, by award winning author Eve Bunting, captures a wonderful middle of the night feel. Her quiet soothing story is complimented by the beautiful watercolor illustrations from Ted Rand.

The family scrambles out into the moonlight, bringing a box, a lantern, and a blanket. At first I thought they were going to find a tree to chop down, but that isn't their plan. Along their path they see a deer in the woods, and hear a hooting owl. "Their" tree has grown since last year. The family decorates the tree with popcorn chains. They hang apples and tangerines, and balls made of pressed millet, honey, and sunflower seeds. Around the tree they scatter shelled nut, breadcrumbs, and pieces of apples for the little creatures who can't climb very well.

Once the tree is decorated, the family spreads out their blanket and enjoys hot chocolate as they admire their tree. They even sing songs. One of the things that makes this book seem more real is the slight sibling bickering. The older brother gives his sister a hard time for singing non-Christmas songs. And he is frustrated with his sister for wearing boots that are too big for her.

Back at home, the boy in the story falls asleep thinking about the birds having Christmas dinner, along with the squirrels, opossums, raccoons, and even the skunks.

Even though this story takes place on Christmas Eve, it's a great winter book to share during times other than Christmas. Like Stranger in the Woods, it may prompt your family to decorate their own tree for the birds and other small creatures.
