What Will Mommy Do When I’m at School? – Dolores Johnson

For many districts, school starts next week. There are countless children’s picture books available to help your child deal with the anxiety they may go through as they face their first day. I list just some at the end of this blog, but right now I’d like to introduce you to “What Will Mommy Do When I’m at School?” by Dolores Johnson. Our main character is a little girl who is heading off to school tomorrow. She’s worried about her mother, because she’s never left her alone for a whole day before. She wonders if her mother will miss her, … Continue reading

Noisy Nora and Read To Your Bunny – Rosemary Wells

It’s hard to be the middle child, and no one knows that better than Noisy Nora in this popular children’s picture book by Rosemary Wells. Originally published in 1973, it was completely reillustrated in 1997 for a new generation of fans. Mother is busy feeding baby Jack and Father is playing with Nora’s older sister Kate. Then the baby had to burp, and Nora is left in the middle, feeling left out. So she decided to slam some doors and throw some marbles around, but that didn’t get her the attention she wanted; everyone just told her to be quiet. … Continue reading

Author Review – Rosemary Wells

Whenever I review several books by one author, I like to take a look at the author themselves and discover what makes them who they are and how they got the ideas for their projects. Let’s get to know Rosemary Wells. Her father was a playwright and actor, and her mother danced in the Russian ballet. Both of them loved to read, and her grandmother took her to the New York museums on a regular basis. Because of this classical upbringing, she was surrounded by music and art, and at the early age of two began to exhibit artistic skills. … Continue reading

My Kindergarten – Rosemary Wells

Rosemary Wells has made quite a name for herself with children’s books that feature animals as the main characters. Perhaps you’d know her best from “Max and Ruby.” While this brother/sister combo are probably her most famous characters, she has created several, and “My Kindergarten” features many of them. Much thicker and more involved than her other books, Rosemary put together this book with a great deal of thought into the curriculum taught at kindergarten so she could complement that curriculum with the things she chose to include in the book. We begin in September with the first day of … Continue reading

Back to School Books

If your child is starting school there are some great books that will help him to prepare for this big event in his life. You may have a child who is excited or you may have a child who is a little fearful. This may be your child’s first year of school or it could be their third year. For some children every year is difficult for them until they get the hang of the routine. After all, they have had the summer off with a completely different schedule. They have not had homework either. Bedtime did not come with … Continue reading

Where Are Max and Ruby’s Parents?

“Is Ruby Max’s mommy?” asked my 5-year-old, as we watched yet another episode of the animated Nick Jr. series, “Max and Ruby.” “No, she’s his big sister,” I replied. “Then, where’s their parents?” she retorted. It’s a question that has launched a thousand ships… okay, the vessels may still be in port, but the subject has apparently bothered enough people that there are now multiple Facebook pages dedicated to answering the question every parent (who has ever had to sit through more than one episode of the preschool series) has asked themselves: “Where are Max and Ruby’s parents?” I’ve pondered … Continue reading

How to Be Cool in the Third Grade – Betsy Duffey

As the countdown toward the first day of school continues, I offer “How to Be Cool in the Third Grade” by intermediate author Betsy Duffey. Robbie is excited for the first day of school. Last year was awesome, but last year, he knew how to be cool. It was easy to figure out what was cool in second grade, but now he’s faced with a new challenge – what’s cool in third grade? It’s a whole new playing field now – the kids are older, the teacher is different, the trends have changed – how can he figure out what’s … Continue reading

Bunny Books by Rick Walton

I admit it; I’m a bunny girl. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my birthday comes close to Easter and so everyone gives me bunny presents, but I’m a fanatic. When I saw these adorable books by Rick Walton, I had to snatch them up. First is “Bunny Day,” a telling time book. At eight o’clock in the morning, Father calls the bunnies and tells them it’s time to get up and get moving. It’s time for breakfast! The bunnies come downstairs, dressed in footie pajamas and yawning. At nine o’clock, they get dressed and make … Continue reading
