Is It Time for Mickey Mouse To Get a Facelift?

Can an icon still be an icon if its image changes? That’s the question Disney officials are asking themselves as they begin to consider a reinvention of Mickey Mouse. That’s right; the trademark mouse in Disney’s house might be getting a makeover. Disney executives are concerned that the younger generation doesn’t care about Mickey. In 2009 only 20% of Mickey’s $5 billion merchandise sales came from the United States. Consequently, the folks at Disney fear that Mickey is nothing more than a corporate mascot to American children, and that’s the issue they want to address. Other than saying considerations are … Continue reading

A Blogging Mouseketeer

Working for Disney has long been a secret wish of mine, although I must confess that blogging wasn’t actually on the list of things I could do there! My real big dream job has probably now been replaced by technological advancements, which means that the animated movies are now in the hands of graphics geeks rather than old fashioned artists, so there’s probably not much call for someone to do the cell coloring anymore. A number of years back, to my great joy, I visited Disney’s MGM Studios on a day they were offering small classes in drawing Disney characters … Continue reading

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – Review

What is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? It’s a relatively new children’s television series from Disney that began premiered on May 5, 2006. New episodes air on Saturdays and Sundays and it is part of the Playhouse Disney weekend line up. Fans of the classic Disney characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto, will enjoy the programming that is designed to interact with the young viewers. My daughter is a huge fan of the show and asked if I’d add it to our TiVo so she can watch it during the week. The show engages the viewers by involving … Continue reading

Can You Really Afford Cable?

Forget about alcohol, tobacco, Facebook or chocolate; cable TV is one of the most addicting entities around. Just ask the kids who spend hours upon hours watching it. Then, ask the parents who use it as a babysitter. These days it doesn’t take much to get moms and dads to admit that they’ve used cable to keep their kids occupied. Got an important phone call to make, turn on Nick Jr. Want to use the bathroom in peace, switch it to Cartoon Network. Desperate for a few minutes of uninterrupted me time, Disney Channel to the rescue. Cable is undoubtedly … Continue reading

Disney Junior to Become A Channel

On March 23 Disney will debut a brand new channel: Disney Junior. The announcement, in this case pulled from Disney fan magazine website DisZine, doesn’t come as that much of a surprise. In some of its marketing for new shows Disney has mentioned Disney Junior, though before this notice on the new channel I’m sure many, like me, just assumed that any relevant shows would air during Disney Junior (formerly known as Playhouse Disney) hours on its parent channel. Up until this point, Disney Junior has just existed as a scheduling block on the Disney Channel, one meant to indicate … Continue reading

Disney Jr. – Live on Stage!

It’s certainly a time of change at Disney, and last week the latest took place: the switch from Playhouse Disney to Disney Jr. Thanks to Michele for pointing it out to me; I wasn’t sure if Disney Jr. was indeed the replacement for Playhouse Disney, or just an additional feature. Despite discussing it, we’re not really sure of the motivation for the name change. The most likely candidate is that Disney’s trying to compete with Nick Jr., but having names so similar seems like it will just cause more confusion than competition. I also thought that perhaps execs thought kids … Continue reading

Go Diego Go! Great Gorilla (2008)

“Great Gorilla” was released to DVD not long ago, and the minute my son saw the ad, he wanted it. Ah, the magic of television advertising . . . we picked it up at Blockbuster the other day and watched it as a family. While only my youngest two are in to Diego and the rest of us consider it a unique form of torture, I had to admit there were some better than expected moments. The DVD contains four episodes. The first is the one for which the DVD is named. Diego travels to Africa to attend the crowning … Continue reading

The Next Hannah Montana Must Have

The next thing your kid is going to want is a flight to Nashville on Sunday. There will be an open casting call at the Sommet Center by Walt Disney Studios for extras to appear in “a major motion picture based on a hit television series starring a well known pop teen sensation.” Since we all know the Hannah Montana movie will be shot in Nashville, this seems a bit of a no-brainer. Let’s see…hit Disney television series…Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? Not likely. Mickey has ceased to be a pop teen sensation as he’s fairly elderly now. The biggest television series … Continue reading

An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000)

In “An Extremely Goofy Movie,” we see that Goofy’s son Max has graduated from high school and is now going off to college with his two friends, PJ and Bobby. He’s really excited to be getting out on his own, and, I’m sorry to say, despite everything he learned in “A Goofy Movie,” he’s still ashamed of his father and wants to be anywhere but with him. He takes off early one morning without looking at the nice breakfast Goofy prepared for him and without even saying a proper goodbye. Goofy’s heart is broken as he wanders through the house, … Continue reading

Playhouse Disney Live

When we went to Disney World a couple of years ago, we had the pleasure of seeing Playhouse Disney Live at Disney-MGM Studios. My daughter, then 4 years old, thrilled to seeing Bear in the Big Blue House live on the stage along with Stanley and more. Beginning this September, you won’t have to travel to Disney World to enjoy Playhouse Disney Live as it begins the first U.S. live tour of 70 cities. Playhouse Disney Live The live stage production features four shows worth of characters from Disney Channel’s popular programming block. The featured shows will include characters from … Continue reading
