We started out with a review of "Hatchet" by best-selling adventure novelist, Gary Paulsen. When Brian's parents divorce, Brian is sent elsewhere to live, and at the airport, his mother makes him a gift of a hatchet. That hatchet becomes his lifeline when the small plane crashes and Brian must learn to fend for himself in the wilderness. We then read "Chopping Spree" by Diane Mott Davidson. Caterer Goldy Schultz is hired to create a fabulous spread for some rich clients at the nearby shopping mall when the manager of the mall is killed, and Goldy's assistant accused of the crime. "Reconstructing Natalie" is a bold, sassy look into the world of women who have breast cancer. Through humor and tear-jerking moments alike, we cheer these women on as they embrace their situation and learn to live each moment with passion. "The Three Snow Bears" is an Alaskan version of the familiar Goldilocks story, and "Mr. Katapat's Incredible Adventures" teaches children the value of literacy. In "Fran's Friend," we celebrate the bond between a girl and her dog with darling illustrations. "Always a Bridesmaid" is a Christian romance novel that tells us story of Melody, a girl who was jilted in college and then learns that her sister is about to marry the guy who dumped her. Other novels by the same author, Andrea Boeshaar, reviewed this week are "The Long Ride Home," about a cowboy who learns to depend on the Lord after losing his rodeo career, and "The Summer Girl," about a man who falls in love with his nanny and finds religion at the same time. "Quarterback Dad" is a parenting book refreshingly written from the dad's perspective, and we were treated to an interview with Bobby Mercer, author of the book. "Adelaide Piper" is a profound story about a girl who is assaulted while attending college and how that attack changes her perception of the world around her, but how she's able to mesh all the pieces of herself into a whole once again, a different whole, and yet complete nonetheless. We finished out the week with an interview with Karen Salmansohn, author of countless self-help books with attitude. She specifically spoke with us about her new release, "Bounce Back."
