Where Are Max and Ruby’s Parents?

“Is Ruby Max’s mommy?” asked my 5-year-old, as we watched yet another episode of the animated Nick Jr. series, “Max and Ruby.” “No, she’s his big sister,” I replied. “Then, where’s their parents?” she retorted. It’s a question that has launched a thousand ships… okay, the vessels may still be in port, but the subject has apparently bothered enough people that there are now multiple Facebook pages dedicated to answering the question every parent (who has ever had to sit through more than one episode of the preschool series) has asked themselves: “Where are Max and Ruby’s parents?” I’ve pondered … Continue reading

Max and Ruby

The Nick Jr. children’s television show “Max and Ruby” is based on the bestselling books by Rosemary Wells about a little three-year-old bunny boy named Max and his older sister, seven-year-old Ruby. Ruby is very down to earth, pragmatic, and responsible. Max is free spirited, a little bit of a handful, and smart as a whip. Together they make quite the combination. Each episode of the show follows a formula. Ruby wants to accomplish something for the greater good, and Max keeps interrupting her, ruining her plans, and generally making a mess of things. He doesn’t say much, usually just … Continue reading

Can You Really Afford Cable?

Forget about alcohol, tobacco, Facebook or chocolate; cable TV is one of the most addicting entities around. Just ask the kids who spend hours upon hours watching it. Then, ask the parents who use it as a babysitter. These days it doesn’t take much to get moms and dads to admit that they’ve used cable to keep their kids occupied. Got an important phone call to make, turn on Nick Jr. Want to use the bathroom in peace, switch it to Cartoon Network. Desperate for a few minutes of uninterrupted me time, Disney Channel to the rescue. Cable is undoubtedly … Continue reading

What Do Your Kids Google?

How many things have you Googled today? If you visited the online giant in the past 24 hours you might have noticed a quaint bucolic scene featuring a random cow minding his own business in a snowy pasture. Then, out of nowhere a monster snowflake falls like the famous New Year’s Eve Ball in Times Square, barely missing the oblivious bovine. The comical Google Doodle was created to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the largest snowflake, which reportedly landed in Montana in 1887. For parents around the world that useless bit of trivia could have been the springboard for an … Continue reading

Kid-Friendly Scrapbooks

Life would be so much easier if my young daughter was into Scooby-Doo, Mickey Mouse, or Sesame Street. Instead, she likes obscure kiddie characters that are not featured as scrapbook embellishments. Dang. I so wanted to create a layout featuring her favorite Nickelodeon characters, but I can’t find a single company that sells “Penguins of Madagascar” stickers, stamps or die cuts. Ditto for “Bubble Guppies” and “Max and Ruby.” However, if your kid is into Elmo, Cookie Monster or Big Bird, then the scrapbook supply world is your oyster. Good gracious, have you seen how much Sesame Street scrapbook merchandise … Continue reading

When Your Kid Wants to Bring the Easter Bunny Home

There was a time when my young daughter wanted nothing to do with the Easter Bunny… at least the one at the mall. Time has apparently erased the bad feelings she had for the candy-toting rabbit because now all she talks about is how she wants the Easter Bunny to bring her a real rabbit to care for, instead of the chocolate kind. Greeeeeeeeeeeeat! How did bunnies and baby chicks become the poster animals for Easter anyway? What’s more, do parents really present live bunnies and chicks to their kids on Easter Sunday? I’m no farmer, and I highly doubt … Continue reading

Play Day

It’s that time of year again. A day set aside for parents to give their kids a less than gentle nudge out the door in an effort to encourage physical activity. Only today said parents actually get help from the very thing that often promotes their kids’ sedentary lifestyle—-the TV. Specifically, the kid-centric cable powerhouse Nickelodeon, and its virtually endless array of offshoots, Nicktoons, Nick Jr. and TeenNick. Yes, dear parents, today is “Worldwide Play Day.” For the past seven years, Nickelodeon has pulled the plug on its entire media dynasty from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it plans … Continue reading

Make Funny Bunnies for Easter

Forget about the return of chirping birds, spring flowers, warmer temperatures and veiled crucifixes, I just saw a telltale sign that Easter is on its way: a commercial for Max and Ruby’s Breakfast with the Bunnies Week on Nick Jr. Because, you know, Easter just wouldn’t be Easter without a week’s worth of funny bunny episodes. If you can’t countdown to Easter without bunnies, but you don’t have cable, or you are looking for something a little more productive for your kids to do over spring break, then consider making the following simple crafts. Your children will love seeing how … Continue reading

Frugalista Fashions: The 1980’s are Back!

In visiting the outlet mall these last few weeks as fall fashions begin to fill up the store, I have found one thing in common with everything in the stores. I wore the same fashions in the late 1980’s. Black and teal plaid shirts, short bubble skirts, crop jackets, skinny jeans and bold costume jewelry found in the stores remind me of everything I wore in my last year of high schools. This is great news for the frugal woman. If you are the type to hold onto clothes for twenty years you can dig out those old items and … Continue reading
