When My Best Friend Lost Her Baby

When I found out I was pregnant last spring, my best friend, Jessie, was one of the first people to find out. A few weeks later, she called me with some news of her own; she, too, was pregnant. She was a week and a day behind me. We were so excited; we were going to have babies together! But Jessie was in a completely different situation than I was. She had a Mirena IUD in place, which had been there for almost five years. She had some tough decisions to make. She decided right away that she wanted to … Continue reading

Maintaining Friends

On one of the forums recently one person bemoaned the fact that since she and her boyfriend have been together she has lost contact with friends. This is what can often happen when people become part of a couple or get married, unless we make an effort not to allow it too. We need to work to prevent this and to ensure that we maintain friendships that were formed in earlier times. We cannot afford to be cavalier with friendships and disregard them easily. True friends are a great source of blessing, help and encouragement as we go through life … Continue reading

Tinker Bell is headed to DVD again soon. Walt Disney Pictures has announced plans to release a new animated movie featuring the pixie Tinker Bell from the popular Disney movie Peter Pan. The movie, called Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is the second film in a new “Disney Fairies” series of movies that is expected to span at least five films. The movie is a follow-up to the original Tinker Bell movie that was released last year. Ticker Bell is also a huge part of the current Disney on Ice storyline. According to the press release put out by … Continue reading

Scarlett Johansson Weds and Uma Thurman Hooks Up with Furry Friends

Scarlett Johansson is now officially Mrs. Ryan Reynolds. The two good-looking Hollywood stars tied the knot in Canada this weekend, according to Johansson’s rep. Reports say the intimate wedding took place Saturday evening at a remote wilderness resort outside Vancouver. Guests included Scarlett’s mother and brother. Few details on the ceremony were released, though that should come as no surprise since the actors are not big on publicizing their private lives. In fact, 23-year-old Johansson and 31-year-old Reynolds typically go out of their way to throw off reporters and the paparazzi. The couple, who have been dating since Spring 2007, … Continue reading

Lost Highways – Curtiss Ann Matlock

I love finding new authors (well, new to me) and Curtiss Ann Matlock captured my imagination from the first page. Her narrative voice is so friendly and quirky—I was pulled in to the character even before I picked up on the plot. Rainey Valentine is a complicated woman. Complicated in a good way, though. She’s been divorced twice but still believes in true love. She’s taken a little time off from her ‘real’ life to follow a dream—her mother, champion barrel-racer, left her the prize horse and trailer in her will, and Rainey is driving around the country to compete … Continue reading

What Love Is: Learning Long Marriage Secrets from Families.com Members

Earlier this year I committed myself to making the best of Marriage in ‘08. I planned to do that by accentuating the positive and examining tools of the trade others used in their marriages. Especially long lasting marriages. I’m still on that mission, but I’ve already learned a lot. And a lot of it has been gleaned right here from other Families.com members. A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That The very first thing I realized was actually the last of the four rules I wrote earlier this year: One Size Doesn’t Fit All. This is … Continue reading

What Affects Friendship?

Friendship seems to be the ‘in’ topic at the moment. Everywhere I find articles about friendship making friends, keeping friends, letting go of friends, dealing with friends in specific situations. I’ve written several myself on the topic. It all made me wonder why friendship has recently become such a big topic. Is it because people are so pressured for time and time poor in today’s society that relationships, whether that be romantic or friendly relationships are the first to suffer? Is it because people move more often than they did in earlier times and those moves often put people further … Continue reading

Friends: You Just Never Know Who You Have in Common

Last night a very weird thing happened: Wayne and I realized a friend of mine was married to a friend of his. Maybe not so unusual in and of itself, but we’ve known both of them separately for years and they’ve been married a while. Except it wasn’t until last night that we made the connection. Here’s what happened. I got a belated Christmas letter from Peggy, a friend I’ve known since I was a little girl. We knew each other through our dads. Growing up my dad had a good friend, Ralph, he sometimes hung out with on weekends. … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! – Making Friends with Food

I’m now weighing in at 258.0. This is fabulous – I’ve been trying for a long time to get below 260.0, and I’m so glad that I’ve finally done it. My ticker now says that I have 98 pounds to go, as opposed to 100 and above, and I’m delighted. I’ve been going to the gym and riding the recumbent bike all week long, and I’m starting to see a little definition here and there, and also some overall smaller-ness taking place. However, I have been a little sad because I’ve been at 258.0 all week long. I’d hoped to … Continue reading

Daddy-Long-Legs – Jean Webster

I’ve heard about the book “Daddy-Long-Legs” on several occasions, and knew there was a Fred Astaire-Leslie Caron movie based on it, but it wasn’t until the other day that I finally picked it up. You know I’m a big Louisa May Alcott/L.M. Montgomery/Gene Stratton-Porter fan – this book fits right into that genre and I was captivated immediately. Jerusha Abbot has lived her entire life at the John Grier Asylum for Orphans. Now that she is seventeen, she’s lived there longer than most of their wards. The trustees have been at quite a loss to know what to do with … Continue reading
