Little Monster Did It! - Helen Cooper

by Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger

"Little Monster Did It!" by Helen Cooper is one of those children's picture books that incorporates a cute story with darling illustrations. The face on the little monster is just adorable.

Amy has a mommy and a daddy, and it's very quiet at their house, except for the times when she decides to play her drums. She liked it best with just the three of them.

One day, when Amy's mom had to go to the hospital, she left Amy a big box with a note that read, "This little monster wants to be your friend." Amy opened the box and found a huge stuffed monster. She absolutely loved it, and the monster loved her, too.

However, the little monster did not love what Amy's mom brought home from the hospital. It was a new baby, all tiny and wrapped up in a blanket. Little Monster didn't say anything when Mom asked, "Do you like the baby?"

Dad tried to show Amy how to change the baby brother's diaper, but Little Monster somehow made a huge lotion mess all over the place. Then Mom tried to read everyone a story, but the baby started to cry and Little Monster plugged his ears.

Amy and Monster decided to go upstairs. They stomped all around, pretending to be elephants. Then things got worse - the baby cried all night, every night for weeks on end! Amy and Monster couldn't sleep, and sometimes, Monster had nightmares.

So they went in to sleep with Mom and Dad, but Monster let the plug out of the water bottle, and it drenched the bed. The next day, Monster broke the video player, made the bathroom sink flood, and woke up the baby. Dad said Monster had better behave, and Mom suggested making friends with the baby, but Monster didn't want to. "But what would Baby do without us?" Mom asked.

Amy started to think about that. Maybe the baby really did need them. Little by little, Amy started to help take care of the baby, but Monster was not amused.

One morning, Monster was nowhere to be found. Amy went downstairs and discovered that Monster had piled up all the kitchen appliances and was balancing, on his head, on top of the stack. Now it was Mom and Dad's turn to not be amused, and Amy snatched Monster and ran.

Where could she hide him? Finally she stuck him in the baby's crib, and Mom and Dad liked that.

Now, if only Monster hadn't shown the baby how to draw on his crib with crayons . . .
