Giving Back

With the economy still in the dumpster, a record number of Americans searching for work, and people pinching pennies to make ends meet, it may be hard to fathom that there are individuals financially worse off than you. As the sun dips below the horizon on the last day of 2011, now is a good time to assess what you really have. In all likelihood you have an abundance of material possessions, some of which can help improve your financial situation. If you are in need of quick cash, go through your closets and garage and see what items you … Continue reading

Poetry for Kids

Roses are red Some orchids are green I love you so much Except when you’re mean I wrote that little ditty when I was in the fourth grade. I’m a poet, and ya didn’t even know it! Unfortunately, poetry is not fully embraced by the American school system. Consequently, many youngsters these days don’t get the chance to fully appreciate the many benefits of metrical composition. According to top researchers for early childhood education, “poetry should be included as an integral part of the language and literacy curriculum because it enriches students’ lives as they discover words, sound, and rhythm … Continue reading

Mister Rogers’ Legacy Lives On

They didn’t show up in cardigans, but the people who gathered to help carry on Fred Rogers’ legacy Sunday kept the TV star’s memory close to their hearts. Two days ago three college students learned that they had been chosen as the latest recipients of the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship. The 4-year-old scholarship program named for the popular children’s TV host awards students $10,000 each to help them fund media projects and studies that focus on such issues as children’s literacy and health. Rogers’ 80-year-old wife Joanne said of the annual awards, “Fred would have been just ecstatic. He loved … Continue reading

Curing Patrick Swayze

“We can cure Patrick Swayze.” Or so claims three doctors who want to give the actor a new lease on life with revolutionary new cancer treatments. The “Ghost” star was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year and since then he has been keeping a low profile. But, the 55-year-old’s name returned to the headlines yet again this week after three self-proclaimed cancer “experts” offered to treat the actor with experimental techniques they consider “miraculous.” Dr. Howard May, Robert Krupa and Dr. Jim Howenstine insist they have the tools to help Swayze beat cancer and they went straight to the … Continue reading

Patrick Swayze’s Battle with Cancer

The bad news: The “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” star has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The good news: According to Patrick Swayze’s doctor, the actor “has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far.” It’s not everyday that a celeb’s doctor releases a statement to the media, but apparently some news outlets have been erroneously reporting that Swayze was given a year to live while others noted that the actor has been hit with serious side effects and was bedridden. All of which is untrue, according to Swayze’s physician. In fact … Continue reading

Movie Song Hits: Are They Extinct?

There used to be a time when you could not turn on the radio and not hear a song from a popular movie. But, when was the last time you remember that happening? It may have been after we were inundated with 1997’s “My Heart Will Go On.” Do you remember that one from Titanic? If you don’t, you must not have been alive at the time because that song was played over and over and over on the radio. And over again! Frankly, I got sick of that one, but I must admit there have been movie songs that … Continue reading

There have been many recent updates to providentliving.org. The church has recently issued two new pamphlets regarding provident living. The first is about food storage. Does More Money Mean a Better Education?

Since Congress is changing hands from the GOP to the Dems in January of 2007, the NEA has its sights on what it sees as potential for change. NCLB* and the ESEA** are up for tweaking and renewal. The NEA also has a whole slew of other proposals that they want to see pushed through, such as giving educators additional tax breaks for the money they spend on their classrooms, initiatives to decrease the drop out rate, increase the graduation rate, increase funding for Title 1 programs, and improvement for their teacher’s salary packages (benefits, pensions etc.) What I read, … Continue reading

Homeschooling in Maine: Option 1

This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system. Although I generally blog on all options for one state in the same blog so that it is easier for those of … Continue reading
