Trial by Fire — Terri Blackstock

In book 4 of the Newpointe 911 series, we learn more about Nick, volunteer firefighter and pastor. As a religious leader in the community, Nick is admired and respected. His friends and coworkers come to him with their troubles and he says the right words to make everything better. Often, he reads to them from the scriptures and reminds them of God’s love. Word of Honor — Terri Blackstock

In book three of the Newpointe 911 series, “Word of Honor,” we learn more about Jill Clark, a character we’ve seen before but haven’t fully explored yet. She is an attorney who has often worked with the emergency service people of Newpointe, and has made friends with them as well. She is staying overnight in a hotel room, when suddenly her door crashes open and in comes a gunman, holding a rifle. Leveling it at her head, he takes her hostage, and she learns that a bomb has gone off at the post office, killing three people instantly and leaving … Continue reading

Line of Duty — Terri Blackstock

In keeping with the commemoration of September 11th, I have chosen to review books that in some way hearken back to the men and women who have made this country what it is today. This novel by Terri Blackstock, while it is last in the series I will be reviewing, was written to honor the men and women who served us during 9/11 and I think it’s very appropriate to review this book today. Taken from the acknowledgement: “As many of you know, I fully intended to end this series with Book 4, “Trial by Fire.” But on September 11, 2001, … Continue reading

The Whole Truth – James Scott Bell

I just finished “The Whole Truth” by Christy award-winning author James Scott Bell last night, after reading it in virtually two sittings. Wow. That’s about all I can say. Well, not really – you know I can talk the hind leg off a mule. When Steve Conroy was five years old, two masked men came into his bedroom and kidnapped his older brother, seven-year-old Robert. They didn’t find him until it was too late, and Steve was wracked with the worst guilt. He didn’t call out when the men came – they threatened to kill Robert—and he just knows that … Continue reading

One Tuesday Morning – Karen Kingsbury

When I reviewed nationally published Christian author Karen Kingsbury’s “Like Dandelion Dust,” I said I would be hunting down more books by her. Well, I did, and while I didn’t enjoy this book quite as much as I did “Dandelion,” I liked it quite a bit, so much that I was up until 3 a.m. finishing it. As you may have guessed from the title, “One Tuesday Morning,” this book is about the 9/11 bombings. Jake Bryan is a firefighter who is deeply in love with his wife, his daughter, and with the gospel. He’s concerned because his wife Jamie … Continue reading
