Moonbear Books by Frank Asch

“Moonbear” is a popular children’s book character targeted at listeners in the preschool range and for early readers. There are several books in this series, and I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of Moonbear’s adventures. Our first book today is “Mooncake.” One night, Bear and his friend Little Bird sat down together to watch the moon rise. The two friends got to talking about how hungry they were, and Bear wished he could fly up and take a big bite out of the moon. Little Bird wasn’t sure the moon would be good to … Continue reading

The Children’s Picture Books of Margie Palatini

Once again I bring you children’s picture books of madness, mayhem, mirth and merriment! (And I’m going to love every minute of it.) First is “Moo Who?” Hilda Mae Heifer is quite the cow. She can belt out a “moooooo” with the best of them, and often did, to the annoyance of all the animals on the farm. In fact, her mooing got so annoying, one day someone threw a big ol’ cowpie at her and it knocked her right on the noggin. Have you ever heard of a cow with amnesia? You’re about to. Hilda Mae could not remember … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about Relationships with Parents

I enjoyed both of today’s picture books very much. They reminded me of some of the best things about being a parent. The first book is “No Matter What” by Debi Gliori. Our characters are a couple of cute little foxes, a mother, named Large, and her son, named Small. One day Small was in a pretty bad mood. He put a bucket of dirty wash water on his head and sat in the puddle. When Large came to find out what was wrong, he said, “I’m grim and grumpy. And I don’t think you love me at all.” Large … Continue reading

“Humphrey” Books by Sally Hunter

We all know that I’m a pushover for cute illustrations. These books by Sally Hunter grabbed me as soon as I grabbed them. Humprey is an absolutely adorable little elephant, drawn in a style that reminds me quite a bit of Precious Memories. The colors in these books are soft pastels, all the edges and lines of the pictures are softened and not sharp, and when you open the book you feel as though you’ve stepped into a nursery. In the first book I’m featuring today, entitled “Humphrey’s Corner,” Humphrey is looking for a place to play. First he finds … Continue reading

And Here’s to You! – David Elliott

This fun children’s picture book is a celebration of life. Each page is illustrated with rich, saturated color, a treat for the eyes. Words of gratitude are frequent, and the reader can feel the joy that comes from going outside on a brilliant spring day and just enjoying nature. The author raises a salute to birds, using his young female narrator to say, “Here’s to you!” She calls them “feather people,” and gives special mention to the birds who whooo, cockadoodledoo, the ones who have red breasts and the ones who sit on telephone wires. She appreciates all of them … Continue reading

Grandma According to Me – Karen Magnuson Beil

My grandmother passed away eight years ago, and although it has been a while, her memory is still vivid with me. I love “Grandma According to Me” as it is told through the eyes of a young girl, and it so closely echoes the thoughts and feelings I have about my own grandmother. We read that Grandma has a nice big lap, and she can hold two children in it at the same time, but our narrator likes it best when she has Grandma all to herself. Grandma’s lap is as soft as a pillow, and there aren’t any places … Continue reading

Bernard Wants a Baby – Joan Elizabeth Goodman

Bernard was an elephant who lived in India, and he decided that he wanted a baby more than anything else in the whole world. He asked his grandma if he could have one, and she said he’d just have to see. When he went to the park with Grandma, he saw a little baby who was spitting up. He didn’t think he wanted one that did that, and he told Grandma so. He also didn’t want a baby sister. He wanted a baby brother, and he wanted to name him Max. Oh, and while he’s at it, he really doesn’t … Continue reading

The 108th Sheep – Ayano Imai

Emma is having a very hard time going to sleep. She’s tried everything. She’s had a nice glass of warm milk. She’s even read a whole stack of books (a girl after my own heart) but the exciting stories only made her feel more awake. Finally, she has an idea – she’ll count sheep. That should do the trick. But Emma’s counting doesn’t seem to work, either. When she reaches one hundred, she is still awake. So she keeps counting – but when she reaches one hundred and eight, the 108th sheep doesn’t appear. Instead, she feels a bump, and … Continue reading

Duck and Goose – Tad Hills

One day, Duck and Goose came upon a big round, white object with spots all over it in the middle of a field. They’d never seen anything like it before, and they both immediately assumed it was an egg. And they both wanted it. An argument immediately ensued, with much yelling, and then they felt guilty, because if they woke up the baby inside, that would be very sad. But they had to find a way to decide who the egg should belong to. They both thought they should build an enclosure to keep the other out. The one thing … Continue reading

“What?” cried Granny … an almost bedtime story – Kate Lum

My children have a hard time going to sleep at night unless everything is just right, so this book struck me as funny on a couple of different levels. Patrick is having a sleepover with his granny, his very first ever. He’s excited, but there’s just one little problem. When Granny tells him to get ready for bed, he realizes that he doesn’t have a bed at Granny’s house. When he tells her . . . “What?” cries Granny, and she immediately runs out to her workshop and builds him a bed out of trees she has cut down from … Continue reading
