‘Twas the Night Before Halloween

Here’s something way, way, way off the normal course of offerings from me to you here in the Pets Blog. My attempt at paying homage to a classic holiday poem, “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore –but with a twist. And it stars my three little monkeys: Murphy, Mr. Meow and Tabby. (Along with some seasonally appropriate Halloween cohorts, of course.) I’ll warn you now I’m no poet. Most of the rhyming is a stretch, the meter’s off, and who knows if any of it makes any sense, but this is what taking a nap the day before … Continue reading

A Tiger Called Thomas – Charlotte Zolotow

A Tiger Called Thomas is a sweet, non-scary Halloween story. Charlotte Zolotow is one of my favorite children’s book authors. In the story, Thomas moves to a new neighborhood. He is too shy to go play with anyone, so he sits on his porch and watches the world go by. His mother urges him to go play and make friends, but he is convinced that no one will like him. On Halloween, his mother gives him a tiger costume. Under the mask, he finds the courage to get off his porch and go trick or treating. To his surprise, all … Continue reading

Dragon’s Halloween – Dav Pilkey

Dragon’s Halloween by Dav Pilkey is the fifth book in the Dragon series, and is a great book for young readers. I love the Dragon books. They are sweet, and silly. The illustrations are worth paying attention to. You will find all sorts of extra laughs. Even though the book has simple words, the descriptions are marvelous. The book begins “It was October, and all the world was orange and brown.” Dragon’s Halloween is divided into three short chapters. In the first, Dragon searches a pumpkin patch for a pumpkin as big as a house to make into a scary … Continue reading

Lift-the-Flap Halloween Books

Young children love to guess and they love lift-the-flap books. We had Boo Who? A Spooky Lift the Flap Book by Joan Holub when my boys were little and they loved it. I think what kids really love is so guess correctly. They love be right. Each page in the book has a fun and simple riddle to read, and a flap to lift to solve the riddle. These riddles are quite simple. It’s no surprise that it’s a ghost who says “boo” or that a witch is the one in the point hat. The book also includes Halloween standards … Continue reading

Happy Haunting, Amelia Bedelia – Herman Parish

Happy Haunting, Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish is a fun Halloween book for Amelia fans. Happy Haunting has all sorts of the kinds of silly puns that we expect from an Amelia Bedelia book. Young readers love these books. It’s fun to read about a grownup who gets things so wrong and in such silly ways. In this book, Halloween has Amelia Bedelia very confused. She comes home to find Mr. and Mrs. Rogers decorating their house for a Halloween party. You would think that by now Mr. Rogers would know better than to tell Amelia Bedelia to crack a … Continue reading
