RS/EQ: Gifts of the Spirit

The ninth lesson in the Joseph Smith manual is entitled, “Gifts of the Spirit.” The lessons begins by pointing out that Joseph was an unlearned man and was not gifted with languages, and yet he was able to translate the Book of Mormon. This was a gift of the Spirit he was given to help fulfill his mission on this earth, and similarly, we have all been given gifts to aid us, as well. The seventh Article of Faith states: “We believe in the gifts of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.” The manual adds, … Continue reading

Finding Faith – Terri Ferran

“Finding Faith” is the first novel for LDS author Terri Ferran. We read of Kit Matthews, a girl who has grown up in Ventura, California. When her father announces that he’s gotten a new job in Logan, Utah, and the whole family will be moving, Kit is less than enthusiastic. She’s even less excited to discover that everyone in Utah speaks a strange language, full of things like “ward” and “stake.” When she finds out that she’s branded as different because she’s a non-member, she comes to the conclusion that Utah has nothing in it for her. But that was … Continue reading

We begin with a look into the fruit of repentance. Before we can embark on a … Continue reading

Mitten Strings for God – Katrina Kenison

I first read Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry about five years ago. The subtitle appealed to me because I was a mother in a hurry, but also because I wanted to take the time to reflect and make sure I was at least coming close to being the kind of mother I wanted to be. The book is a collection of essays on the experience of being a mother. Katrina Kenison asks some good questions. She asks what message we are sending children with elaborate birthdays and overstuffed goody bags. As the mother of boys … Continue reading

Gifts of Self-Esteem – Mary Jane Woodger

“Gifts of Self-Esteem” by Mary Jane Woodger carries a subtitle: “Obtaining Spiritual Gifts and Strengthening Self-Perception.” That, in a nutshell, describes the whole book, but it’s not just a useful volume for someone who struggles with a negative view of themselves. There are many different angles to this book and it would be a wonderful gift for anyone who is seeking to draw closer to the Lord in any aspect of their lives. We begin with a chapter called “Combatting the Ds.” The “Ds” are: Depression, Despair, Despondency, being Dismissed, Discouragement, Doubt, being Discounted, and feeling Dead. These are all … Continue reading
