Genres in Literature, part two

Thanks for joining me for the continuation of our discussion of genres in literature. If you missed part one, click here. Literary – I have to admit, I’m not a lover of literary literature. When you’re talking about literary novels, you’re talking about books that are full of symbolism, with plot lines that may or may not actually make sense, and there’s supposed to be a deep meaning behind all of it. This is a genre that is studied frequently in college English classes and enjoyed by many around the world. I don’t know if I’m just not that deep … Continue reading

Mistress of the Revolution – Catherine Delors

“Mistress of the Revolution” is a beautifully packaged historical fiction novel by first-time author Catherine Delors. Set in the midst of the French Revolution, it features the romance, drama, and intrigue we have come to expect from books of that era. What sets this book apart from the rest is the personal knowledge the author has of this time and place – herself a Frenchwoman, she grew up with these stories as her own heritage. Our story is about Gabrielle de Montserrat, a young lady who was sent off to live with a wet nurse as soon as she was … Continue reading

Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969)

I’m not much one for westerns, although I’m trying to broaden my horizons. I didn’t get a traditional western out of “Support Your Local Sheriff!” – instead I got a slapstick spoof, and I loved every minute of it. James Garner plays Jason McCullough, a man who’s just passing through town on his way to Australia. The people in the community have just become rich, hitting upon a vein of gold just a short time before, and they’re having a hard time adjusting to their sudden wealth. Fights are breaking out all over town, greed is getting the best of … Continue reading

Not All Fiction is Fluff!

It’s been a little while since I’ve gone off on an editorial-type rant, and after being good for so long, I’ve decided to break my silence in honor of Literacy Month. As a huge supporter of literacy, I talk to scores of people about the importance of being literate and how literacy can change lives. We all essentially agree that nonfiction is a valuable resource to help us to become educated, but there is a broad range of thought and feeling when it comes to fiction. For some, they’ll read anything voraciously and love every minute of it, others are … Continue reading

Confessions of a Shopaholic – Sophie Kinsella

I went to bed with a bad headache last night. After taking some medicine, I thought I would lay down with a book until the pain subsided, and then I’d be able to go to sleep. I stayed up until 2:30 a.m. – there was no way to put the book down until it was finished. In this nationally published chick lit book, Rebecca Bloomwood is a financial journalist for the magazine “Successful Saving.” There’s just one problem with that – she’s also a compulsive shopper, and is in debt up to her eyebrows. She regularly gets letters from her … Continue reading

The Obituary Writer – Porter Shreeve

I started out “The Obituary Writer” with a set of expectations, and found them all shattered by the end. It was a fabulous surprise. Gordon Hatch is a young obituary writer for The Independent. He longs to become a top-notch crime reporter and has his own police scanner. Sometimes late at night, he’ll flip it on, see where the action is, and run to the scene, hoping that someday he’ll be able to break into the business in a big way. His father, long since deceased, was a great reporter, and even covered Kennedy’s assassination up close and personal. With … Continue reading

Hidden in a Whisper – Tracie Peterson

In my attempt to ever increase the breadth of my reading and to provide a greater variety of books in this blog, I read a historical romance novel called “Hidden in a Whisper” by Tracie Peterson, an award-winning Christian author. I have to admit, I don’t generally read novels that are driven by romance. I usually pick suspense or historical fiction that has elements of romance in it, but not as the main story. So this was definitely a departure for me. We begin the story with Rachel, a girl of twenty-one who does not think she’s pretty. When Braeden … Continue reading

A Hole in the Earth – Robert Bausch

I really went back and forth with myself on whether I should review “A Hole in the Earth.” It had some interesting themes and I found the overall concept intriguing, but it does have some language in it. Back and forth I went, trying to decide, and then I said to myself (I really do talk to myself) “Tristi, present the book to them and then they’ll decide for themselves.” So that’s what I’m going to do. Our main character is Henry Porter, and the book is written from his point of view. He starts by telling us that because … Continue reading

The Icing on the Cake – Elodia Strain

This new LDS chick-lit release from first-time author Elodia Strain tells us the story of Annabelle Pleasanton, copy editor at a local magazine. She’s been given the opportunity of a life-time – to write an article about the fanciest restaurant in town. She’s also been given an assignment – bring a Portuguese cake to the office party. It would appear that getting the cake would be, well, a piece of cake, but the bakery is located an hour and a half away, plus it has moved to a new location since she was there last. While looking for directions, she … Continue reading
