The Grinch and Dr. Seuss

The other night, one of my favorite Christmas shows was on – “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” I admit that things that were cool when I was a kid forty years ago probably aren’t as cool for kids now. I made my seven-year-old watch it with me and he did a bit, through his Nintendo DS. He must have been paying more attention than I thought because he does know the words to several of the songs and knows who Cindy Lou Who is. The story was written by Theodor Geisel – that’s Dr. Seuss to me and you. In … Continue reading

A Fun Breakfast with Horton Hears a Who

We had breakfast today at the International House of Pancakes. We haven’t seen the new “Horton Hears a Who” movie yet, but the marketers are doing their job. My ten year olds knew all about the special menu at IHOP featuring green eggs and ham, a drink called a Beezlenut Splash, and Who-Cakes. They passed on the green eggs. Since the eggs are made with creamed spinach, I could hardly blame them. The Who-Cakes came in graduated stack of five cakes, secured together with a pink lollipop stuck through their middles. Blue and pink glazed icing ran over the top … Continue reading

Dr. Seuss Series: Horton Hears a Who

One of the most famous of all Dr. Seuss’s novels, “Horton Hears a Who” was first published in 1954. We remember Horton, the adorable elephant from “Horton Hatches the Egg.” Now he’s back for a whole new adventure, courtesy of his remarkable hearing. He was splashing around in the pool when he heard a very tiny noise. He stopped splashing and looked around, but no one was there. Then he heard it again. It was a very small cry for help. He looked around again, but the only thing he saw was a speck of dust floating by. He looked … Continue reading

Dr. Seuss Series: Hunches in Bunches

Dr. Seuss is one of the most famous and well-respected children’s authors of all time. I think it’s safe to say that we’re all familiar with “Green Eggs and Ham,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and “The Cat in the Hat.” However, Dr. Seuss wrote forty-four children’s books total, and we’re just barely scratching the surface when we think about “Horton Hears a Who.” I’m going to spend some time investigating some of the lesser-known Seuss masterpieces and invite you to come along with me. Our first selection is “Hunches in Bunches,” which was published in 1982 and is one … Continue reading

Cartoon Scrapbooks

My young daughter is a huge fan of the new PBS children’s series, “The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!” Interestingly, she was never a huge fan of the “Cat in the Hat” books, but once she saw the cat come alive in the animated series, she was hooked. All of a sudden she is all about the cat. She nearly fell over when she saw that Target is selling “Cat in the Hat” socks in their $1 bins and she just about ripped my arm off dragging me over to the aisle in the scrapbook store … Continue reading

Elephants and Chili Peppers

Misbehaving elephants in northeastern India are leaving their habitats and wreaking havoc. Wandering elephants have destroyed homes, decimated crops, and trampled people. Wildlife experts are trying a somewhat unconventional method to keep elephants away from villages near the elephant habitats: the world’s hottest chili. Fences around villages and fields are smeared with automobile grease and bhut jolokia, the ghost chili. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the ghost chili is the world’s hottest chili pepper. Conservationists have also used chili smoke bombs to keep the elephants away from residential and growing areas. Dried chili and straw lit on … Continue reading
