Dora The Explorer

Our second foster placement was a toddler girl who loved to crawl into the guest room bed and watch cartoons on Noggin, which is now NickJr. It was with Gemini that I learned what Nickelodeon had to offer beyond Blue’s Clues and NickToons. Gemini loved Dora The Explorer and I was grateful that she watched it in a room I wasn’t in. I didn’t know why I didn’t like Dora; I just didn’t. I enjoyed Go, Diego, Go, and it was basically the same who with Dora’s male cousin. Maybe it was Dora’s voice. When Jessie came into our life … Continue reading

Happy Birthday Dora!

Okay, I admit it: We’re Dora fans… well, kind of. Come Sunday my 6-year-old daughter will be tuned into Nickelodeon’s TV movie, “Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure,” but not because she’s fallen victim to the pimped out backpack-wearing, adventure-loving girl with super rescue powers. Rather, my little wannabe dog has a thing for Boots, Dora’s pet monkey. So much for the girl power theory. Still, if it were not for Dora, there would be no Boots… or Diego or The Big Red Chicken or Isa or any other pastel-colored talking vermin. And whereas that would be just fine by me, childhood … Continue reading

Parents of Preschoolers Upset About Dora the Explorer

Although we limit television viewing in our household, I have to admit that there are some shows that make all of our lives easier. For example, if I have a sick preschooler or if I need to keep everyone out of the kitchen for 30 minutes they can do the trick (yes, I feel guilty enough already). Some of the shows that meet our approval include Blues Clues, Sesame Street, Cyber Chase, Between the Lions and Dora the Explorer. My kids have learned some things from watching the shows, and they enjoy them as well. I don’t know if you … Continue reading

Mom Alert: New Tweenage Dora Has Arrived!

I gave you the heads up about this “new and improved” Dora in a previous blog, but now the day has come… Tweenage Dora is here. Well, kind of. She won’t be hitting toy store shelves until November (just in time for Santa to tuck her under the Christmas tree), but her prototype was unveiled last week at the New York Toy Fair. Brace yourselves mom… here’s what the new Dora has in store for girls 5 years and up: · An updated Dora with long, luxurious hair and a massive wardrobe · A complete line of Dora’s girlfriends with … Continue reading

Dora the Explorer is Getting a Makeover: What’s a Parent to do?

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It’s an overused phrase, but rather fitting in regards to the latest announcement by the creators of “Dora the Explorer,” who insist it’s time to give the famous cartoon character a makeover. Fueled by the popularity of older rivals such as Disney’s phenomenonally successful “Hannah Montana” and racier entries into the toy market like Bratz dolls, executives at Nickelodeon (the children’s TV network that airs the adorable Spanish speaking nina) are reportedly in talks to re-design some Dora-themed toys and merchandise to make the character more feminine. According to new reports, Nickelodeon executives … Continue reading

Dora the Explorer: Big Sister Dora

Dora has many different movies out as well as her cartoon. Many of her videos contribute to a child’s character or education. In one of her movies, Big Sister Dora, Dora is awaiting the arrival of her new baby. While out on her adventure with Boots, Dora carries a cell phone so her father can notify her when the babies are born. Not long into their exploration, Dora gets the call. Of course she must check with Map to find the way home. Once her route is mapped out, she is all ready to go. Dora and Boots meet several … Continue reading

The Preschool TV Battle is Heating Up

Your preschooler may be more powerful than you think. At least when it comes to watching television. According to Nielsen Media Research, children ages 2 to 5 spend an average of 32 hours in front of a TV each week. For cable networks this means big business.  In the past five years, a slew of channels dedicated to preschool programming have inundated the market.  Since 2000, Nick Jr. has continually garnered the highest Nielsen ratings.  The Viacom-owned channel is dedicated solely to preschool children and is home of the mega-hit show “Dora the Explorer.” Riding the wave of popularity with … Continue reading

Back-to-School Drama

As if parents don’t have enough to worry about as back-to-school season gets underway. Apparently, finding ways to pay for a mountain of school supplies, worrying about bullies on the bus, cajoling kids into bed at night and out in the morning, packing lunches, prepping outfits and finding the perfect bag, is not nearly enough for parents to deal with as September rolls around. Of course not. Now, we also have to figure out how to protect our kids from their own backpacks. Thanks to a new report published by the Center for Health, Environment and Justice, moms and dads … Continue reading

Bald is Beautiful

Someone once told me that bald only looks good on babies and old men. Well, clearly the person has never seen a young cancer patient rock a bald head. Kids fighting for their lives against insidious diseases like cancer, which can rob them of their locks during treatment, should never have to worry about whether or not they will be ridiculed by their peers for looking different. Thankfully, I’m not the only one who feels this way. The manufacturer of those uber-popular American Girl Dolls is making bald look beautiful. The company’s new “Doll Without Hair” line is quickly becoming … Continue reading
