Chopping Spree – Diane Mott Davidson

Another installment in the Goldy Schultz catering series, “Chopping Spree” takes place two years after Goldy’s marriage to Tom. Life is going well, with the exception of teenage son Arch, who is shortly to turn fifteen and believes that he’s somehow entitled to all the cool gadgets his rich friends have. The catering business has really taken off, and Goldy is getting more jobs than before, which leave her worn out and starting to lose her health, but after so many years of just barely scraping by, she’s excited to finally be making some headway with her career. She’s also … Continue reading

Sticks and Scones –Diane Mott Davidson

I’ve read several books in the Goldy Schultz series, but “Sticks and Scones” is by far my favorite. In the past, I’ve found many of the “caterer-turned-detective” stories to be a little too heavy on food preparation and a little too light on story, but this one gave me the perfect balance. Goldy’s abusive ex-husband, also known as “The Jerk,” has been released from jail following a far-too-short sentence for assault. The same weekend, Goldy’s front window gets blown out with a shotgun, and she thinks it may have been “The Jerk” trying to scare her into giving him more … Continue reading

Author Interview – F. M. Meredith (2)

Thank you for joining us for part two of our talk with author F. M. Meredith. If you missed part one, you can click here to catch up. F. M., you mention you’ve gone on ride-alongs with police officers to lend authenticity to your stories. Was that frightening? Did anything scary ever happen with you in the police car? The scariest ride-along was with my son-in-law, who drove really fast, careening around corners. He also made me get out of the car and follow along behind when he was chasing a burglar. I wasn’t so scared as wondering what I’d … Continue reading

The Desiree Shapiro Series by Selma Eichler

Selma Eichler created loveable and unusual private detective character Desiree Shapiro, an overweight lady who has no problems with her size. A little bit irreverent at times but always hysterical, Desiree takes us with her into her world of a tiny office, shady characters, sneaky dealings, frequent meals, and no guilt afterwards. I’m pulled in two directions with these books. On the one hand, Desiree has a great personality and is a marvelous character. It’s high time that us women of generous proportions found ourselves represented in a positive light by a woman of size and yet strength. On the … Continue reading

Mrs. Jeffries Takes the Cake – Emily Brightwell

An installment in the “Victorian Mysteries” series, “Mrs. Jeffries Takes the Cake” is the first Emily Brightwell novel I have read, but it will not be the last. I was quite taken with the premise and the characters and will return again soon. Inspector Witherspoon is a hard-working Scotland Yard detective with a superb record for cases solved. He has received much acclaim for his amazing ability to see through to the heart of the case and solve the most difficult mysteries. What his adoring public does not realize is that the good Inspector wouldn’t know how to solve a … Continue reading

Owls Well That Ends Well – Donna Andrews

Meg Langslow is a unique woman with a unique talent – she’s a blacksmith. For the time being, however, she’s had to put her forge aside and forge ahead with something even bigger, in the form of a fifteen-family yard sale. She and her boyfriend Michael have purchased an older home on the outskirts of the small town of Caerphilly, and all the things that were in the house now belong to them. Most of it junk, some of it collectable, they’ve decided to have a yard sale and all the relatives decided to join them and bring their own … Continue reading
