More Picture Books about Snow

We had some late-season white fluffy stuff fall on our lawn this morning, and so in honor of the day, I thought I’d share with you two more cute children’s books about snow. The first is “A Really Good Snowman” by Daniel J. Mahoney. Jack is having some issues with his little sister Nancy. She likes to be helpful, but her helpfulness is most often destructive. He’s been working really hard on a model airplane, and when Nancy comes in the room, she wants to help him with it. Picturing it as totally destroyed, he tells her that he’s going … Continue reading

Tristi’s Picks: Best Children’s/YA Books Read in 2006

To go along with the blog posted earlier about the best novels I’ve read in the year 2006, I’m sharing with you a list of books for children and young adults that I particularly enjoyed. Again, it was difficult to determine an order; I happened across some wonderful books this year. Click on the book title to read the full review. 1. “Ashes of Roses” by Mary Jane Auch. The story of the Triangle Factory Fire in New York City, I learned a great deal about the young immigrant workers who perished in the fire and the labor laws that … Continue reading

When I Was Young in the Mountains – Cynthia Rylant

The picture book When I Was Young in the Mountains was a Caldecott Honor book in 1984. The book is a story based on author Cynthia Rylant’s own childhood in Appalachia living her grandparents and other relatives in Cool Ridge, West Virginia. The illustrations by Diane Goode have an old-fashioned feel as this loving family of grandparents and grandchildren go about their daily lives. Almost every page begins with the words “When I was young in the mountains”. The repetition gives the book a nice oral tradition storytelling kind of feel. This book is great early history about the pleasures … Continue reading

The Mouse Who Owned the Sun – Sally Derby

Of course, we all know that no one owns the sun. It was placed there for all of us to use and enjoy, and it is controlled by gravitational pull and physics. But once there was a mouse who thought differently. He believed that the sun belonged to him! Every morning he would tell it to rise, and sure enough, not too long after that, it rose. Every night he told it to set, and it did. He thought himself a very important mouse with a very important job. He was so important, in fact, that he never left home. … Continue reading

Mr. Finnegan’s Giving Chest – Dan Farr

Christmas shouldn’t end just because the day itself has come and gone. With that in mind, I’d like to share with you one of the gifts our children received from their grandparents this year – a picture book entitled “Mr. Finnegan’s Giving Chest.” Maggie is a bully. She enjoys picking on children at school and has very little compassion for their feelings. It gets worse around Christmas time. She hates the season; it brings out all of her little beasty tendencies. One day Maggie’s coat gets snagged on a fence while she’s chasing a little boy from school, and she … Continue reading

The Day My Runny Nose Ran Away – Jason Eaton

Perhaps you have a cold, as many of us do. You may wish you could just take your nose off altogether, rather than having to deal with it any further. But be careful – you could end up “facing” the same situation as Jason does in this hysterical children’s picture book, “The Day My Runny Nose Ran Away.” One morning, Jason wakes up to find the following note on his pillow: “Dear Jason, Last night your mother told you not to wipe your nose on your sleeve. But did you listen? No! You wiped me up and down your lousy … Continue reading

Do You Have a Hat? – Eileen Spinelli

The cover of this children’s picture book features a child wearing a crazy orange winter hat standing in front of a snowy scene. Just perfect for the upcoming holiday season, I thought as I picked it off the library shelf. Each page features a different variety of hat and tells the reason we would want to wear it, all in cute rhyme. The characters are cute and engaging, making the pictures a delight to look at. What came as a pleasant surprise was the fact that not only does this book discuss different types of hat and why we wear … Continue reading
