Blue’s Clues

It used to be that Sesame Street was the most beloved children’s television show of all time. It’s certainly still up there in the ratings, but of all the shows that have come around more recently, Blue’s Clues is giving the old classic a run for its money in the popularity department. The premise is simple. A young man named Steve lives in a house with his puppy, Blue, and several talking objects such as a drawer, a clock, a shovel and pail, and a salt and pepper shaker set. Each day, there’s something Blue would like to do or … Continue reading

Not the Dentist!

My son is three and a half and terrified of his first dentist trip. He loves to brush his teeth, but if you even mention the dentist he comes unglued. This isn’t uncommon, most kids aren’t thrilled about having to go to the dentist. Unfortunately, this is one of the necessary evils of childhood. Seeing the dentist is crucial to the health of your child’s teeth. It may help ease some of the anxiety if you have a pretend visit first. All you need is a toothbrush and a mirror. Count your child’s teeth with them and let them look … Continue reading

Beware of Chick Flicks

I, like most girls, love a good chick flick. They’re girly and fun and have the potential to bring out a million different emotions in their 90 minute time frame. As a parent, I don’t get much time to watch movies. Logan has usually taken over with Dora, Elmo, Blues Clues, Bubble Guppies, and the countless other preschool shows. So when he is at his dad’s I make it a point to throw in at least one of Mommy’s shows. It gives me a chance to relax and do just a little something for me while he is away. It … Continue reading

Favorite Phases

When daughter was a toddler she absolutely adored watching Blues Clues. However, most of her viewing came courtesy of DVDs which I would have to set-up for her. By the time she was three, my daughter knew that it required a few button presses by mom before Blue and crew would show up on our television screen. While I adjusted settings, my daughter would grab her stuffed Elmo chair and settle in the middle of the living room smack in front of the TV. She would wait anxiously as I powered up the TV and DVD, made some menu selections … Continue reading

Dora The Explorer

Our second foster placement was a toddler girl who loved to crawl into the guest room bed and watch cartoons on Noggin, which is now NickJr. It was with Gemini that I learned what Nickelodeon had to offer beyond Blue’s Clues and NickToons. Gemini loved Dora The Explorer and I was grateful that she watched it in a room I wasn’t in. I didn’t know why I didn’t like Dora; I just didn’t. I enjoyed Go, Diego, Go, and it was basically the same who with Dora’s male cousin. Maybe it was Dora’s voice. When Jessie came into our life … Continue reading

Parents of Preschoolers Upset About Dora the Explorer

Although we limit television viewing in our household, I have to admit that there are some shows that make all of our lives easier. For example, if I have a sick preschooler or if I need to keep everyone out of the kitchen for 30 minutes they can do the trick (yes, I feel guilty enough already). Some of the shows that meet our approval include Blues Clues, Sesame Street, Cyber Chase, Between the Lions and Dora the Explorer. My kids have learned some things from watching the shows, and they enjoy them as well. I don’t know if you … Continue reading

Hannah Montana Essay Contest Debacle

It’s incidents like these that make me overjoyed that my young daughter is still in love with Strawberry Shortcake, Hello Kitty, Elmo and Blues Clues… and that she has no clue who Hannah Montana is. (I’m hoping I can keep her in the dark for years to come.) If you have a pint-sized Hannah Montana fan in your home then you might be familiar with the essay contest brouhaha that emerged when a 6-year-old girl and her mother went to extremes to secure four concert tickets to the tween sensation’s sold-out show. The youngster’s essay began with the powerful line: … Continue reading

This Week in Television – August 15, 2007

Noggin to go 24/7 This is the news that stay at home moms will either love or abhor to hear. MTV, owners of both Noggin and the N, have decided to split the channel into two separate channels by the end of the year. In case you do not have a toddler or teen, Noggin is known for playing shows geared towards preschoolers. My toddler personally loves Blues Clues, Go Diego Go!, Maisy, Max and Ruby, the Wonder Pets, and Wow Wow Wubbsy on Noggin. But, at 6 pm EST, it turns into the N, the super cool network for … Continue reading
