Best Folktale and Fairytale Books

Children and adults love to read, especially when it comes to folktales and fairytales. For instance, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Red Riding Hood are just some of our favorites. Another great category for children’s books is those that focus on Irish folklore. Although there are many books that you might consider buying, I wanted to provide you with some of my favorite choices. First, a book called, “Tales from Old Ireland” is a wonderful book that is enhanced with beautiful artwork. Inside this book are actually seven stories, each with a wonderful message to the child. Tops & Bottoms – Janet Stevens

Tops & Bottoms is a charming and unique picture book written and illustrated by Janet Stevens. You will need to turn the book sideways to view the illustrations. As a bonus, it’s a great introduction into how vegetables grow and a vote for working hard. The book draws on the traditions of trickster and Brer Rabbit tales as well as European folk tales. In the story, we meet a lazy land-owning bear. He’s so lazy that he sleeps through growing seasons. We also meet the rabbit family who are not doing well. The rabbit father, Hare, lost a bet with … Continue reading

Spicy Gingerbread

When most people think of gingerbread, they think of gingerbread houses, or gingerbread cookies shaped like little men. . .or to be more ecumenical, little ‘people’. . .but gingerbread actually has it’s origins as bread and not cookies. (Some food historians believe that gingerbread cookies as we know them, originated from Germany while cake like gingerbread was popular in other places in Europe.) Regardless of its origins, traditional cake like gingerbread makes a wonderful … Continue reading

Cinder Edna – Ellen Jackson

We’ve all heard the story of Cinderella. But did you know that she had a next door neighbor? That girl’s name was Cinder Edna, and she was pretty much in the same boat. All day long, both girls worked hard scrubbing, cleaning, and cooking. (What’s up with their neighborhood?) But there was one significant difference between them. When Cinderella’s work was done, she would sit near the fireplace to keep warm, thinking about her troubles, while Cinder Edna sang while she worked and took advantage of her situation to learn all she could about cooking and housework. Edna had tried … Continue reading

Aesop’s Fables

Although there are many picture books for your children to enjoy, I wanted to encourage you to consider Aesop’s Fables. Keep in mind that these fables date back to the 6th century but have been enjoyed by children around the world ever since. Now, Aesop’s Fables are available in many different books but two in particular are what I consider the best. For one thing, each of these picture books has incredible illustrations and the stories are excellent. In addition, the three I will mention are suitable for children of all ages so young or old will enjoy them. Best … Continue reading
