Movies Week in Review June 23rd-28th

We have a little bit of everything for you this week in Movie Reviews! We started out the week with “Raising Helen,” a romantic comedy about a career woman (Kate Hudson) who inherits her sister’s children when she is killed. As Helen learns how to be a parent, she’s helped along the way by her other sister (Joan Cusack) and by the surprisingly good-looking pastor of their new church (John Corbett). “Get Smart” is a remake of the old classic television show and manages to update the premise while still staying true to its roots. Starring Anne Hathaway as Agent … Continue reading

Author Review: Max Lucado

Best-selling Christian author Max Lucado first came on to the scene for me with his children’s book “You are Special.” It was read aloud in church, it was talked about in the bookstore, and suddenly the name “Max Lucado” was everywhere. What I didn’t realize, and what many didn’t realize, was that Max was not new. It’s we who were new to the knowledge of him. Max was born in 1955 in Texas, the youngest of four. He went to Abilene Christian University with every intention of being a lawyer, but as he took the Bible course that was required … Continue reading

The Children of the King – Max Lucado

This simple fable touched my heart with the importance of taking the time to listen and to hear, and to not get so caught up in our everyday lives that we neglect those things that really matter. Once upon a time there were five orphan children. They had no one to rely on, so they decided to band together and become a family. (Sort of sounds like the O’Malleys.) One day word came that the king had decided to adopt them, and he would come soon to collect them. The villagers went into an uproar to get ready for the … Continue reading

Author Review — Dee Henderson

Dee Henderson is possibly the foremost Christian author currently on the market. With her incredibly suspenseful mysteries, her believable characters and touching religious moments, it’s not hard to see why her readers keep coming back for more. I have reviewed her most popular series, “The O’Malleys,” here on Families.com, and now I’d like to tell you more about the author herself. This proved to be a little bit difficult, as Dee is a very private person. She doesn’t share personal details with her fans, preferring to maintain a distance. Given her large fan base and popularity, I think that’s wise. … Continue reading

More Reassuring Books for Adopted Children

Some time ago I published a blog on Reassuring Your Adopted Child. This blog shares some more books with reassuring messages for adopted children—and for all children. Max Lucado, author of spiritual books for both adults and children, has two books which I believe will be helpful. The first book is Just in Case You Ever Wonder. The illustrations by Toni Goffe begin with a young infant, but the text could be for either birth or adoption: “The same hands that made the stars made you.” “God made you like no one else.” “And since you were so special , … Continue reading
