rewToday we are joined by Barry K. Phillips, author of the new nonfiction book "Caught in the Headlights: Ten Lessons Learned the Hard Way." I reviewed this book earlier today and you can read that review here.

Barry, thank you for taking the time out to be with us today. Your book is about the important lessons you've learned in your life. Out of these lessons, is there one that you would say is more important than all the rest of them?

Well, that's a tough one. The lesson about not looking for happiness is probably the most important, because it's such a motivating factor. If we really understand what we're after in that category, we'll tend to get the other lessons going in the right direction.

As you wrote the book, did you find yourself coming to even deeper realizations about the lessons than you did when you first learned them?

It has taken several repeat enrollments in the same courses to learn these lessons to begin with! But, writing the book was a great way to crystallize the lessons more fully in my mind.

Which of these lessons would you say was the hardest or most painful to learn?

This is different for everyone, but I've been the biggest repeat offender on the Big Event lesson. When you are both entrepreneurial and very driven, it's easy to get too focused on one goal and miss some of the most important things going on in your life.

Your book is nonfiction. Is that your primary genre, or do you have desires to write fiction in the future? Do you have any more nonfiction titles in the works?

I have a non-fiction, hopefully humorous book that I'm writing right now. Non-fiction is what I like best. There's nothing like spewing my ideas with no one there to stop me! I might try a fiction book at some point... maybe something like, "Why I've Won Friends and Influenced People."

That would be a great book, Barry! Thanks again for being here, and best of luck in all you do.
